Letter From Home to Panhandle Servicemen During Christmas
A Panhandle newspaper notes Christmas in 1942 as troops tour Amarillo streets in uniform. It mentions furloughs for some reporters say Billy Reeves and Maj Jimmy Daley, plus prisoners of war in Japan including Capt Charley Underwood. WAAC recruitment grows and local events, sports results, and social notices fill the page with holiday spirit.
Pint-Sized Marine Nabs a Nipponese
Pvt. Frank E. “Chicken” Wilson, the youngest Marine on Guadalcanal, helped capture a Japanese sergeant major and personally marched the captive back to camp. He survived shell bursts near forward outposts and plans to return home for liberty to visit Imogene Hill, a Birmingham high school student, while his enlistment reveals his early heroism and brief years.
