Thieves bored through 18 inches of brick to steal registered mail and about 19,000 dollars in postage stamps from the Alfred Street post office. Police found no sign of forced entry. one thief may have hidden inside. The loot included 58 registered pieces. value per envelope uncertain.
Three well dressed bandits robbed the First National Bank of Coalgate about noon. They kidnapped cashier Oliver Browning, assistant cashier Mrs. O Connell, and three customers, then fled northwest toward Ada in a Ford 8 sedan. A posse pursued as details emerged.
The Globe reprints Arthur Brisbane on oxygen-like government aid and crime shocks from Littleton. Amarillo experts warn heat risks to trees and shrubs, advising continued watering but avoid puddles to prevent bark damage from late freezes.
The FTC prepared to prosecute 100 American cleaners and dyers for under cutting NRA code price edicts. Penalties include up to $500 per violation plus daily counts for continued underpricing. Melvin C. Jones was named Counselor Commander of the Woodmen of the World camp in Amarillo at the annual officer election. Other officers elected include J. Walker Hunter Adviser Lieutenant Roy E. McGee banker Houston Taylor secretary W. B. Cowhurst escort E H Wilkinson watchman J M Baltzell sentry and O W Floyd re elected manager for three years. The camp will donate obsolete uniforms to a welfare group and hold a December 26 entertainment inviting Woodmen Circle and friends.
Jack Wisdom, 26, convicted of killing Emery Large and the Pritchards after a card game dispute and a forged check, was given a life term in Lansing after pleading guilty to the Pritchard murder. The case closed in about 20 minutes, following a dramatic search for the victims.
Col and Mrs Charles A Lindbergh rest in Port of Spain after a 1,100 mile flight from Manaus Brazil. They plan to fly to Miami with possible stop in Puerto Rico, aiming to spend Christmas with son John Morrow Lindbergh. Rain dampened the hydro monoplane on landing and crowds cheered.
Moscow reports that on December 13 United States Ambassador William C. Bullitt presented credentials to Mikhail Kalinin at the Kremlin. Bullitt praised Kalinin and Roosevelt's greetings and urged genuine friendship and world peace. Kalinin thanked Bullitt and spoke of mutual cooperation, removing artificial barriers between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.
Amarillo's Junior Charity League will stage its fourth annual Charity Ball Monday night at the Amarillo Country Club. Roy Diven's Orchestra will provide music. Wickets cost $2 per couple and are sold by league members, at the Rose Bowl Tea Room, or at the Country Club. Proceeds benefit the free baby clinic.
In Santa Claus Indiana, Postmaster James F. Martin resumes duties as the town’s Santa Claus after letters from across the globe swamped the office. Despite earlier talk of political party shifts and a possible loss of the post, Martin and local families continue the Christmas work with renewed happiness.
Slaughter of cattle for Amarillo relief meat canning plant began at Pinkney Packing Company. The first 30 head from Potter County were bought by Tim Flores for sale permits issued by P C Bennett. The plant will employ 648 county relief workers and canned meat will be distributed to Panhandle families.
Jose Rodriguez pleaded guilty in Potter County court to theft of clothing from a secondhand store. He received a 15 day jail sentence plus costs, with about 45 days to serve on the misdemeanor charge. No other cases were docketed for Wednesday.
A Commerce Department committee submits a tentative report to President Roosevelt weighing three paths for communications control. It favors government regulated monopolies and possible Western Union Postal Telegraph merger while considering ownership or continued fragmentation and foreign line issues. The president will refer the report to Congress committees for study.
The Japanese abalone fishing boat Utah exploded and burned near Point Pinos 85 miles south of San Francisco. Captain Y. Tamuna and three crew escaped to a motor tender before the blast and reached Monterey. Cause cited as defective wiring.
Washington reports the dollar’s strength with a new opening price of 34.01 dollars per ounce for newly mined domestic gold. The London market opens at 503.12 dollars per pound while the bar price uses a 31.74 dollar pound rate. The gold program remains secondary to budget work at the White House and Treasury.
New York report notes Anthony Adverse by Hervey Allen as a phenom in publishing. At 1,224 pages its sales near 275,000 since June release, the largest recent novel sale and a standout low mood era hit. Other best sellers noted include Main Street and Elmer Gantry by Sinclair Lewis, All Quiet on the Western Front, and The Outline of History.
Fourteen grand theft charges were filed against David and Berge Mdivani, Georgian princes and former husbands of Mae Murray and Mary McCormic. Indicted by a grand jury for allegedly siphoning funds from Pacific Shore Oil Company, with Robert Vignola and Pat O Malley among complainants. Bail set at 10000 dollars each. attorney Edna Covert Plummer will surrender the defendants.
