Two British ships the destroyer Chevron and minesweeper President rescued 742 Jewish refugees marooned on a Syrian island after their Panama-flag blockade runner ran aground. Eight died seven injured in the incident. The refugees will be sent to Cyprus detention camps.
Beulah Murphy of Borger asks Texas Court of Criminal Appeals for a rehearing of her murder case. She was found guilty in Hutchinson County for the Jan 21 1945 shooting of Elmo Sullins and sentenced to 12 years. She remains free on bond during the appeal.
Earl Thomas Jones who was missing from noon yesterday until last night has been located and returned to his home according to police statements this morning.

Fireman Joe A. Robinson confessed taking jewelry worth several thousand dollars from the Winecoff Hotel after the Dec 7 fire in Atlanta. He signed a statement claiming he took valuables during room checks for additional victims. Robinson, 36, was arrested on disorderly conduct and larceny charges and released on $500 bond. the Jewelry was recovered.

In Frankfurt Germany a spokesman for Gen Joseph T McNarney announced the prohibition on American soldiers marrying German girls would be lifted within 15 days with reservations. The change could allow many soldiers to take German brides home but couples would be investigated for Nazi sympathies and marriages would occur only as soldiers leave Germany. In Globe Arizona rescuers dig through ore and dirt to reach John Orekar 40 trapped by a massive slide. They report hearing tapping on a pipe as late as yesterday afternoon, indicating possible survival after 84 hours.
Galveston police say Bill Brannon a taxi driver poured gasoline on sleeping newsboy Pee Wee West in a truck cab and set it afire. West suffered second degree burns and was treated.
A relief caravan carrying bubonic plague vaccine and supplies was dispatched to Chifeng Jehol Province where over 100 Chinese have died since the outbreak began last month. Officials warned the plague could spread along the rail line to Manchuria.

One year old Sharon Maxine Duby suffered severe burns when a coffee pot exploded, showering scalding water as her mother lifted it from the stove. She was treated at Amarillo Osteopathic Hospital and sent home, with burns on the chest face left arm and left leg.
