Export ban targets Communist China and Soviet Europe
The Commerce Department banned U S ships and planes from carrying strategic materials anywhere in the world destined for Communist China or Soviet Europe. The order, effective immediately, covers weapons, fissionable materials, and strategic goods between any two points outside the United States, including Hong Kong and Macao. It would apply to all shipments to China, with licenses not granted, while non strategic goods to the Soviet bloc in Europe remain affected only if they reach those regions. Senator Maybank announced the action based on Sawyer's guidance, noting Yugoslavia is exempt as a non aligned state allied to Tito's anti Soviet government.

A 30000 gallon water tank at Price College sprang a leak sending spray over the pump house. Brother Benedict said the leak is in the standpipe casing. Water in the tower has not been used for weeks and a frozen pipe might have burst amid the cold wave. The tank is 20 years old and now used mainly for irrigation. The college relies on city water for its supply since last spring.

Wage price lids coming in any case
Washington, Dec. 8. Price Stabilizer Michael V. DiSalle said the government plans a ceiling on prices but sees no need to freeze them now. A wage lid would accompany any ceiling, but a general 60 to 90 day freeze is unlikely due to staff and organizational limits. ESA officials noted possible selective controls on defense materials and roll-back could be retroactive if aimed to deter pre-freeze price boosts.
