Fire swept the old Morris and Company packing plant in Kansas City now owned by Armour and Company, destroying four buildings and causing an estimated loss exceeding $1,000,000. The blaze raged through the night with firefighters battling the flames.

Oklahoma City December report says the House adopted a resolution asking the Senate to enjoin the state board of affairs and other departments from interfering with a self convened investigative session. A petition will be prepared by the legal advisory committee for the Senate. The move could test legality of the two houses. The second item notes Gov Johnston will not discharge Mrs Hammonds, his confidential secretary, amid impeachment pressure and accusations of influence.
An unidentified motorist died when his car was struck by the Texas Special at a Missouri-Kansas-Texas crossing in a San Antonio residential area. The car was demolished and dragged about fifty feet before the train halted.
Velma West, 21, of East Cleveland, awaits arraignment for murdering her husband Edward West with a claw hammer in Painesville Ohio. She described the quarrel, confessed to striking him, then attended a bridge party before returning to the home and hiding the blood with a party dress. West, a wealthy nurseryman, was found murdered with a deep forehead gash.
United Press report from Fort Worth says two men died and two others were seriously injured when a car overturned on Dickens road ten miles from Spur Texas late yesterday. John Picture and Ed Hilton died in the flames while Martin Kernes and H H Johnson were injured. Johnson said he lives at Paris, Texas. Addresses for the others were not known.
Gas escaping from a main being repaired at the corner of Sixth and Tyler was ignited yesterday evening, causing excitement but little damage. The fire department extinguished the flames.
A blizzard halted in Amarillo and surroundings as temperatures dropped to six degrees above zero then rose to above twenty by noon. No wind at the coldest moment contrasted with a strong south wind that began today, signaling warmer weather within a day or two.
A United Press report notes a nationwide cold wave from the Rocky Mountains to the Mississippi valley bringing sub zero temperatures and high winds. Eighteen deaths are attributed to the cold with heavy property damage. The Chicago area saw temperatures dip to 2 below zero near dawn as the system slowly moved east.
The body of J. W. Cearley city marshal was found in an alley behind the Farmers and Merchants bank with two chest wounds. Officials believe he confronted robbers who had attempted to rob the bank, and he had been dead about three hours.
City officials and departmental chairmen of the Board of City Development held a get together at the Amarillo hotel. They discussed current work and future plans to keep the Board and City Commission in closer touch. Attendance was nearly unanimous.
The Republican national committee chose Kansas City to host the meeting opening June 12 after a tight ballot that included San Francisco and Detroit with Kansas City finally prevailing 58 to 39 among main rivals. The decision signals Kansas City as the site for the GOP convention and suggests the Democrats will likely follow suit in scheduling their gathering.

United Press reports in Washington that the House would vote today on President Coolidge’s plan to elevate guns on battleships to increase naval strength. Approval of funding to raise Nevada and Oklahoma guns was expected, with possible future alterations planned for thirteen other battleships.
William B. Prenter, 72, longtime officer in the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and head of its financial institutions, died at his Cleveland home Wednesday from nervous exhaustion and pneumonia after a lengthy career with the union.
New Orleans reports a price rise of 21 to 26 points on the government crop and ginnings data before sliding back to the prior level. New York shows minimal movement after the final crop estimate. yields near 12,789,000 bales, down 53,000 from last month, with 17,977,874 last year. The Agriculture Department provides state by state yield and total production.

Capt Charles Kingsford Smith and Lieut George Pond started a third attempt to beat the world endurance record at Mills Field San Francisco with the Spirit of California. The Fokker monoplane carries 1418 gallons of fuel and lifted off at 7 56 am heading over the Pacific. The current record is 52 hours 21 minutes 22 seconds. Previous attempts suffered tail flutter. a rebuilt rudder and two parachutes accompany the pilots.
Dee Sinclair, multimillionaire in the Teapot Dome inquiry, will testify in his own defense on contempt charges in Washington. Co defendents including detective William J. Burns plan to testify to counter claims of sinister influence over the Fall-Sinclair oil trial judges.
