Burglaries Net Over $1,000 in Amarillo Over Weekend
Burglaries and a robbery in Amarillo yielded more than $1,000 cash. A safe at Amarillo Warehouse Company on First Avenue and Polk Street was cracked stealing $500. A second break in at R. L. Williams grocery on 611 Fillmore Street gained entry by a wall hole and netted $170 plus cigarets. A Saturday robbery at Amarillo Baking Company on Buchanan Street brought $450 to $500. Other burglaries include C. V. Bradford grocery and Allison grocery.

Sheriff Free on Bond After Barnett Death
Rankin Texas December 7 1940 Sheriff W C Fowler of Upton County is free on a ten thousand dollar bond charged with murder in the shooting of Graham Barnett a former Texas Ranger and noted West Texas marksman. Barnett was killed as he drove into a Rankin filling station with two companions. Hess and Snively said Fowler fired from a parked car using a submachine gun. Fowler said Barnett threatened him and he acted to prevent harm. A coroner reported the shooting was in the line of duty. Barnett had a long career from the Rio Grande to the Panhandle and earlier served with the Texas Ranger force beginning in 1916.
