Christmas Tree Safety Rules From Fire Engineers
Engineers from the National Board of Fire Underwriters offer practical precautions for holiday decorating. Place the tree away from fireplaces, use nonflammable wrapping for the base, keep trees outdoors until a few days before Christmas, and prefer a live tree in soil. Avoid candles near wreaths, illuminate wreaths with care, and ensure stockings are hung away from sparks. Check wiring for fraying, avoid overloading outlets, and keep lights lit for short periods only. Maintain water in the tree bucket and change location if needles brown.
