Los Angeles reports that Charles Chaplin's 16 year old bride Lilita Louise McMurray has satisfied California compulsory education requirements. Raymond Dunlop, director of the compulsory education department, announced the exemption.
B D Garmon Panhandle deputy state game warden urged Amarillo to convert part of the Word ranch into a park and game preserve while the city holds an option on land for a water well. Hereford official E W Harrison praised the water site move and pledged regional cooperation. Delegates from the Southwest Trail association attended a luncheon in Amarillo where the highway conference was postponed.
M L Oglesby of the Interstate Commerce Commission bureau of explosives urged extreme caution in handling all explosives. He used lantern slides to show accidents and outlined safe practices to railroad men shippers bus iness men and farmers. Mayor Blasdel introduced him as a leading authority with the Fort Worth and Denver railroad backing the event.
The Community Chest board meets in the Board of City Development rooms tonight to polish budget drive details starting next Monday. Four stenographers prepare solicitor cards as the city is districted for the effort. the $25 000 quota will be shared by six organizations with a contingency fund for unforeseen needs. A. E. Moyer of Santa Fe will conduct the drive, with O. V. Vernon as secretary.
A night patrolman Sam O'Dell and an unidentified youth are dead after a pistol fire incident in Springdale Arkansas. O'Dell stopped a car carrying three youths when the shooting began. two other youths escaped. O'Dell may die from his wounds as authorities investigate the case.
The advisory board postpones tomorrow night’s session to review cost figures for Amarillo’s proposed water system. City engineer H Banks Jones will refine data and add figures after returning from Kansas City where he presented calculations to Wyncoop Kiersted of the engineering firm.
The Amarillo Real Estate Board approved cooperation with Tenth Street property owners to push a crossing over Rock Island rails on West Tenth Street. T. M. Bruner will appoint a committee, Gilvin was named delegate to a Fort Worth meeting, and J. R. Gaul was named alternate as the group backs water well options and realtor licensing efforts.
Temple Tex Dec 5 Ma Ferguson issued a call for a conference to be held in Dallas on December 11 and 12 to consider questions affecting state highways and taxation of motor vehicles and gasoline. The conference follows the Lick eradication meeting in San Antonio and is part of plans for pre inaug ural group meetings on subjects indicating need for legislative action.
Mrs. Lida F. Sevier, 805 Merchant Street, suffered a broken arm and sprained wrist after a Chevrolet coach she rode in collided with a Ford truck driven by A. O. Jones of Hamilton Plumbing at Seventh Street and Mabry Avenue. She was hospitalized at Northwest Texas. Her 6-year-old son, also in the car, was uninjured.
Mrs Way Thompson will tell a series of unusually interesting children stories at Potter County Library during the regular morning story hour at 10 o clock. The stories will be told in the base mont of the library and the Coffee Show at the Amarillo Hotel features Famous For Food.
The Daily Mail reports an alleged Egyptian plot to kill prominent British government members and destroy public buildings in London. News reached the foreign office, cabinet met, and home secretary Johnson-Hicks ordered police chiefs to protect ministers with extra armed guards at all government department buildings.
A report from Amarillo notes North West Cotton Company gin averaging about fifteen bales daily as movement starts. Weather delays were minor yesterday with fair conditions today. Potters county farmers report strong local prices while more than forty to fifty bales remain to be picked. In Fort Worth a gun duel near Keller left O A Morris dead and sleeping car conductor W A Thompson detained.
Chicago reports describe three women attacked by a group of assailants last night leaving one with a probable skull fracture and broken collar bone while a second sustained a torn finger and teeth injuries. A third woman fired shots at the assailant and escaped. Richard Fitzgerald, a confessed robber, had habeas corpus denied.
W C Townes, colonel of the second regiment of the Department of Texas Canton I O O F, will conduct an inspection of Amarillo Canton No 14 at 7 30 in the hall of the W O W building. It is the annual inspection and an open meeting for all Odd Fellows, their families and friends. Chevaliers in uniforms are asked to attend. an entertainment will conclude the evening.
Billie Meek, on trial for the murder of Mrs. Bessie Sommers in a local cafe, is acquitted after testimony by her husband Allen Meek. Brother D W Cox, a Belencia County deputy sheriff and former Texas Ranger, describes family relief and future housing plans in Amarillo and nearby ranching areas.
By 8 o clock tonight the fate of Mrs Billie Meek will rest with twelve jurors in Amarillo. Judge Henry Bishop delivered the charge on murder manslaughter and self defense as the state began its case and defense counsel pressed objections.
Chicago reports Leo Koretz the Panama Oil promoter who swindled investors of about 2 million dollars may be eligible for parole in eleven months as if released from prison. A parole board will review his case after testimony from physicians and officials. Statesville penitentiary is in consideration for his transfer.
Dalhart Tex Dec 5 The fifty blocks of state land in Dal lam and Hartley counties will be offered January 1 as the last of lands recovered from the Capitol Land syndicate Two hundred twelve tracts have been sold this year The Dallam county land is listed as agricultural and mineral and the Hartley county land as grazing and mineral Terms are one fortieth cash and the balance over forty years at 5 percent interest.
The body of Andy Sorenson, prominent farmer living two miles east of Amarillo, found dead in his garage yesterday after leaving a note to his family, will be held at Griggs Chapel until next Tuesday or Wednesday as relatives from many parts of the United States plan to attend.
Wrexham Wales Dec 5 Nine men were killed and many are missing after a colliery explosion early today. Authorities fear more casualties as rescuers search the mine and assess damage.
