Clyde Woodson a 24 year old bricklayer who allegedly confessed to the Illinois Central mail train holdup near Monroe on Saturday night faces arraignment before a United States commissioner in Monroe today on robbery of the mail. He admits cobbing passengers but denies entering the mail car or firing the shot that struck K M Blount of Memphis. Police report the arrest followed information from an autoist.
Washington December 3 AP reports Representative John C Box of Jacksonville Texas was chosen as Democratic whip to succeed the late William A Oldfield of Arkansas. In Houston Leonard Cory don Abercrombie a 19 year old Rice Institute student was fatally wounded by a shotgun discharge during a hunting trip.
A Condor Syndicate passenger plane crashed into Guanabara bay near Cobras Island, killing twelve people. The craft sank to 300 feet and was raised thirty minutes later. only the assistant pilot survived. Passengers were en route to greet Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos Dumont arriving aboard Cap Arcona. Bloomington brief notes freshmen coeds to wear bright green caps with crimson buttons.
Seattle dispatch reports Ezra Meeker longtime Oregon Trail figure died at 4 05 a m aged 97 after a long life of pioneer work He was born September 29 1840 in Ohio and journeyed from Indiana to Oregon with 1600 wagons and about 40000 travelers amid cholera and disease on the great pioneer migration He hoped to reach 100 years old but succumbed to old age and illness while surrounded by family in his final days
Robbers held up three employees and three customers at the Bank of Manchester in Manchester. They slugged the village barber and escaped in an automobile with about 6000 pounds in cash. A third man waited in the car.
Cold weather slowed fundraising as about thirty Amarilloans joined the Community Chest drive for city charities. Fourteen teams canvassed, with less than 14000 raised after six days of effort. Directors warn the drive may end if 7000 or more isn’t secured today or tomorrow. Churches and groups urged to coordinate holiday baskets via the Chest.
Thomas H. Fender, 40, an engineer at Linde Air Products, died after an explosion at the northeast city plant at 8 PM. He told hospital staff he extinguished flames, rolled on the ground to put out a fire that burned his clothes off, then returned to call in help before dying at a local hospital.
