A New York woman 21 seeks a patriotic spouse who would enlist in the armed forces. She offers herself in marriage to a young man who defends the country and urges other girls to follow suit. She notes her blue eyes and brown hair, provides a photograph, and mentions earning a good living as a singer.
Chester Fitz superintendent of city parks looks to exchange a dozen to two dozen squirrels for Ellwood Park in Amarillo and other sites. He has built tree homes fifty feet up, and letters to Denver San Antonio and Memphis yielded a San Antonio offer of 12 to 24 squirrels with possible plant trades. Two Amarillo youths—John Kennehan and Woodrow Henderson—crashed their Taylorcraft planes after mid air collision near the Municipal Airport. Both pilots uninjured, planes damaged. Both are student pilots under the Civil Aeronautics Authority program with Amarillo College, part of a growing flying course begun last June.

Hundreds of Plymouth dealers and salesmen from Amarillo and nearby areas gathered for a private preview of the 1941 Plymouth. At least 20 raiders were shot down, with hundreds of planes involved, while anti-aircraft fire and RAF fighters engage across the channel. Ireland reports bombs killed three girls near Campile and damage to a creamery, prompting a Berlin protest.

Presidential nominee Willkie will spend about an hour in Amarillo on September 17, arriving ~1030 by train from Tulsa. He will parade to Ellwood Park for a 30 minute address before departing for Albuquerque. The visit, arranged by Ralph F Jerome and Panhandle GOP leaders, is Amarillo’s only Texas appearance this campaign.
Johnnie Martin of Borger suffered a shattered arm when his light coupe collided with a truck near the Canadian River Gas Company plant on North highway. Mrs. Martin and a daughter and nephew Harold Miller were en route to St. Anthony's hospital from Santa Rosa New Mexico when their vehicle overturned near Clovis. Mrs. Martin is badly bruised. the daughter and nephew escaped uninjured.
President Roosevelt has allotted nearly 30 million dollars for preliminary construction of camps for the first 400,000 men to be conscripted under the draft bill. The money comes from a 100 million dollar defense appropriation approved by Congress. Location of the sites is undisclosed.
The Panhandle will honor Congressman-elect Gene Worley with a “Mr Worley Goes to Washington” party at Amarillo during the Tri-State Fair. Sept 20 is tentatively set. Local and regional organizations back the effort and a non political reception and banquet will follow a free show at the fair.
Congressman Martin Dies will address the public at two talks in the Municipal Auditorium on September 6. He will discuss subversive activities and the alleged fifth column in the Southwest. Admission is 50 cents for the afternoon, 75 cents main floor and 50 cents balcony for the evening. proceeds go to charity via Dies and the Globe-News.
White House indicated Jesse H Jones federal loan administrator would not decide on accepting the commerce secretary post until after Labor Day. Jones vacations in Michigan and had been offered the cabinet job to succeed Harry L Hopkins. Louis Johnson, offered under secretary of commerce, resigned and said he would return to Washington tomorrow. his acceptance remains uncertain.
Secretary Stimson warned Aug 26 that national guardsmen with civilian jobs key to war effort should resign now to avoid active duty. He urged replacement personnel be found before guard units are mobilized, to keep essential civilian work uninterrupted.
Report says Germany warned Great Britain via Swiss mediation that it will impose sharp reprisals if Britain continues to shoot down German Red Cross rescue planes at sea. The note was relayed from Berlin on August 26.
London reports Herbert Leigh Holman wins an absolute divorce from Vivien Leigh on grounds of adultery with Laurence Olivier whom she is now expected to marry.
Rep. George N. Seger of New Jersey died at the Naval Hospital from a heart ailment. He was 75 years old.
