Employment steady in Allegheny County despite relief costs rise
Bureau of Business Research Pittsburgh and WPA data show employment at about 99 percent of 1929 levels, with July relief spending surpassing 32.5 million while March 1933 costs were just over 1 million. Direct relief now funds all living costs, averaging 31 dollars per family monthly, and WPA wages remain the major expense.
