Formation of Water District Moves Toward Dam Plan

Rogers of Pampa and George Mahon of Lubbock led a meeting with Mayor Clarence Whiteside of Lubbock and Bureau of Reclamation officials Howard Robbins of Amarillo and Harry Burleigh of Austin. Wesley Nelson of Washington attended. Baxter announced plans to convene mid September meetings to form the master district and report to cities while seeking construction funding contingent on national emergency clearance. Senators Connally and Johnson favored advancing construction funds once justified. Michael Strauss of the Bureau said the agency would proceed with formation efforts.

Panhandle Delegation Pushes Canadian Dam Start

Aece renews push to move project forward quickly. Baxter reports the Panhandle delegation will visit the Bureau of Reclama tion to discuss master water district procedures. They met Texas senators and representatives to secure funds for the Canadian project. The dam, authorized last year, carries an estimated total cost near 85 million dollars with only a fraction sought to begin construction.

Burglars Hit Pleasant Valley Drug and Jewelry

Burglars stole merchandise valued at 3000 dollars and about 30 dollars in cash from Lewis Drug and Jewelry Company at 300 River Drive Pleasant Valley. Sheriff Gaither predicted an arrest by dark and noted the store does not handle narcotics.

Prowlers Flee After Woman Grabs Pistol

A pistol-wielding housewife deterred three prowlers in her yard at about 1 PM. Mrs. H. T. Darnell and her daughter Virginia armed with a Luger and a pistol forced the trio to abandon the attempt. the men fled before police arrival and left no trace.

Ringling Bros to perform in Amarillo during fair week

Ringling Bros Barnum Bailey Circus announced to play in Amarillo on September 26 during the Tri State fair period. The show will be located a half mile south of the fair grounds near Grand Avenue and the Fort Worth Highway, with Vaughn Gouldy of Gouldy Bros Grain & Seed Co confirming a contract to supply feed for the circus livestock.

Plans To Appeal Contempt Sentence In New Orleans

Carlos Marcello, who refused to answer Senate Crime Committee questions last January, plans to appeal his six month sentence and $500 fine for contempt of Congress. He was found guilty on six counts at a juryless trial before Federal Judge J Shelly Wright, while 43 other counts were declared innocent.

Remington Guilt Is Ruled Out by Court of Appeals

The US Court of Appeals unanimously reversed the perjury conviction of William Walter Remington former Department of Commerce economist who testified he had never joined the Communist Party. The court faulted the trial judge for a vague charge on perjury and upheld defense objections. Remington had been sentenced to five years and a $2000 fine and freed on bond. The government may appeal to the Supreme Court or retry Remington.

War casualties mount in Korea as totals rise

United States war casualties in Korea reached 81 006 today, an increase of 256 since last week. The rise is the smallest since weekly summaries began last August.

UN Note to North Korea on Kaesong neutrality crisis

Informants say a UN note from Vice Admiral C. Turner Joy will be delivered to the Communist cease-fire delegation in Kaesong. The document, 2000 words plus documents, covers alleged neutrality violations by UN forces and a destroyed white flagged jeep on the Pyongyang Kaesong road.

Tampico battered by hurricane force 78 mph center 130mile pass

A dangerous hurricane struck Tampico Mexico this morning at 8 30 am with winds estimated at 78 miles an hour and a center passing about 60 miles east according to weather bureau reports. Homes were wrecked electric power cut off and reports say many lives were lost as refugees sought shelter in schools and churches while streets were silenced by the storm.

The Horace Heidt Youth Opportunity show will originate in Amarillo Sunday night October 14 broadcast from CBS at 7 30 pm. Golding Meadows Post VFW will sponsor the appearance. Jim Rankin advance man for the Heidt band is in town. A two and a half hour variety program follows at the Municipal Auditorium. Auditions for youth 14 and older open around October 1.

Senator Capehart Hurt in Capitol Fall

Indiana Republican senator Capehart slipped while hurrying to the Senate Chamber, fell, and injured his back. He was moved by wheelchair to an automobile and taken to Bethesda Naval Hospital for examination. the extent of the injury was not immediately known.

Burglars stole about 200 from Peerless Lanes Bowling Alley at 805 Harrison. About 180 cash and checks were taken from a front counter drawer while the safe and tickets for an Aug. 31 game remained undisturbed. Inside job suspected. Police found a back door left open and a hasp screws removed.

Navy Battlewagon Refloated by Tugs

The 45,000-ton battleship Wisconsin ran aground at low tide on the New Jersey shore after slipping its mooring in the Hudson River. Refloated with the incoming tide and tug assistance, the ship arrived yesterday with 800 midshipmen aboard on a summer training cruise and anchored off 79th street.

South Plains Gets Share of Rain Across Counties

The Panhandle rain belt moved south last night bringing slow soaking, ideal cotton rains to Floyd Hale Briscoe Castro Swisher and Lamb counties and to shallow-water irrigation districts where pumps gain their first reg in months. Moisture ranged from .55 inch at Hart Castro County to up to 3 inches near Quitaque in Briscoe County.
