Soldier slain in home after night of drinking and threat

A visiting Plains soldier, Cpl. Walter Tull, was shot dead inside the Collier home in Pittsburg after an argument with James Collier and Phc. Joseph May. The shooting followed a night of beer at two clubs Mecca and Barney's Tavern. Witnesses say Tull shouted he would get Collier later, then lunged for a deer rifle as a struggle ensued.

Amarillo Weather Summary From US Weather Bureau

Amarillo area reports partly cloudy and warm conditions this afternoon with a peak near 98 degrees and a low around 67 tonight. Tuesday brings cooler air with highs near 88. The 24 hour high was 97 and low 69. Panhandle outlook favors outdoor work with few thundershowers minor disruption. West Texas and New Mexico areas expect scattered showers and thunderstorms with cooler northeast portions Tuesday.

Prowlers active as burglars fail to take valuables

Prowlers ransacked the C F Moon home at 113 West Twenty second between 7 and 9 PM while the family attended church, leaving $10 cash untouched. Police checked multiple North Polk and Alabama Street sites, questioned three to four suspects at the city jail, and investigated other prowler reports. Separately, a vent glass was damaged when a prowler entered W L Martins car at 304 Hillcrest. Two vehicle thefts were reported: a dark red 1932 Ford pickup from Downtown Motor Co and a blue 1941 Ford sedan from 1705 Hayden with license AW 9738.

Hurricane Heads for Mexico

A killer hurricane that devastated Jamaica and claimed 109 lives lashed across the Yucatan Peninsula with 100 mile an hour winds. One sailor drowned near Progreso as Merida and its port faced extensive damage and roofs were torn away. The storm, moving toward the Gulf of Mexico, was expected to intensify again after crossing the peninsula.

Amarillo water system shows strong supply despite dry year

Amarillo officials report demand rising yearly with record 31 million gallons daily and 18.2 million yesterday. The city operates 49 wells on three pipelines with capacity 35 to 36 million gallons per day and a 60 million gallon pumping station, funded by water sales and reserves for expansion. The lake site wells boost production as the lake level rises.

Polio Fatal to Robert A Hopper at Veterans Hospital

Robert A Hopper 34, manager of Western Fence Company, died at 6:37 AM at Veterans Hospital from polio after becoming ill last week. He came from Denver and partnered with Clarence Willmering. Survived by wife Flaine Hopper and a 7 year old daughter. Funeral arrangements not announced.

Make Clean Sweep In Return Trip

In Long Beach California three youths stopped James A Jones at a traffic signal and dragged him from his car taking $15 and his keys. He pursued them briefly before they abandoned him and returned to steal his car as well, ending the chase.

Girl Found After Being Held Against Will Near Houston

A helpless 13 year old girl with severe disability was found on Mount Houston Road about five miles from the car where she disappeared from her parents. Margaret Louise Allison, dirty but unharmed, was taken to a hospital for examination. Her mother described the child as unable to move or speak since birth. Authorities questioned a bicycle rider seen near the car but found no other tracks or suspects.
