Arch Odell deputy sheriff and three federal prohibition agents exchanged gunfire in Richmond Missouri. The clash started three miles from town and ended at the county jail. Odell fired believing the agents aimed to hold him up. one bullet grazed agent George Ware. No serious injuries reported.
Negotiations for a five unit oil merger with assets over a billion dollars have reached final stages. The proposed holding company to be Delaware chartered and possibly named Commonwealth Oil Corporation would consolidate Sinclair Consolidated Oil Prairie Oil & Gas Prairie Pipe Line Tidewater Associated and Rio Grande Oil. Terms include stock exchanges for each unit and a decision on preferred stock and exchange basis pending final details.
At the Phillips Petroleum refinery in Borger a gasoline tank fire caused about 85 000 dollars in damage. The blaze started from overflow in a 25 000 barrel tank and spread down a canyon to a waste oil fire. Firemen fought flames with chemicals but allowed the fire to burn out as fuel was consumed.
Wiley Post and Harold Gatty will land in Sweetwater Texas at 3 PM today in the Winnie Mae on their westbound round-the-world flight. They will pick up Mrs Post to fly with her husband to San Francisco. Mrs Post, formerly Miss May Laine, has been visiting her parents on a farm south of Sweetwater.

Government captured 57 machine guns 800 rifles and a million rounds. Rebels fled to a railway tunnel as leaders were believed slain. Separately rebels seized the railroad through Santa Clara province.
Funeral services for David E. Mead 52 Amarillo businessman killed when he fell from a ninth floor Fisk Medical Building fire escape were not announced at 1 PM. Relatives expected tonight. Spanish War veterans to attend. Mead served on the Mexican border and earlier ran a lumber yard.
The Grain Stabilization Corporation would open talks to sell 1,000,000 bushels of wheat to China to aid flood victims. In Hankow area, about 300,000 people are homeless as the Yangtze river remains high and dykes fail, with Wuchang most affected.

Judge E C Nelson Jr of the Potter County court at law remained in critical condition after an appendectomy performed Monday night. He had a comfortable night but his overall condition stayed very sick with the operation having been deemed necessary near the court session. Amarillo attorney W J Plesher was chosen by local lawyers to serve as special judge in several cases set for this week.
The Panhandle Caravan leaves Amarillo at 7am for Albuquerque with about a dozen cars forming the nucleus and a forecast of up to 300 participants en route. Officials planned a five mile outpost meet and a parade led by city and state leaders with Texas flags and a Texan section at the First American hotel.
O B Boss Jackson was arrested yesterday by U S Marshal Jim D Gambell on a telegraphic Santa Fe New Mexico warrant and held in Potter County jail with a 1000 bond. The charge against Jackson is not known. He has not yet posted bond.
In Asheville North Carolina on August 20 the defense for Col Luke Lea of Nashville and three co defendants announced it would not present evidence and rested their case in the conspiracy to defraud the Central Bank and Trust Company of 1 300 000.
Quantico Virginia August 20 Major General Smedley D Butler commanding the Marine barracks filed papers today with the Navy Department seeking retirement effective October 1.
In Dallas a man using the name P T Flynn was arrested on forgery charges in a $45,000 oil swindle. He confessed to a $4,500 partial payment, with a deed forged to cover 44 acres near Tyler and the owner forged as M C Sells. A second alleged accomplice remains at large as deputies pursue him.
Rep. Wright Patman of Texas asks congressmen from 23 southern and western states to meet in Washington by September 14 and press President Hoover to call Congress in special session if he refuses. He proposes a rump session to reach a better understanding on national problems before the formal session and backs government price fixing on farm commodities.

President Hoover selected Fred C. Croxton of Columbus Ohio as assistant director of the reorganized unemployment relief committee headed by Walter 8 Gifford president of the American Telephone and Telegraph Company. Gifford was named to command a new national organization to mobilize unemployment relief next winter with the support of the whole force of the administration. The White House said Gifford will coordinate originate and direct relief for the entire country and will work without pay along with his aides and the advisory committee.
