The grand jury returned three indictments. Calvin White faces robbery by assault charges. Post and E V McDowell are indicted for burglarizing a garage. The case stems from the arrest of Post on theft charges.
Thirty one defendants accused of conspiring to mark up retail food prices in California were fined more than thirty six thousand dollars today by Federal Judge Michael J Roche in San Francisco.
Washington reports the labor department’s women’s division rebutts airplane plant chiefs who accuse women workers of frivolity. Mary Anderson defends women as generally serious and capable, noting some may be immature and recommending mature hires over 36 to bolster war production. She cites West Coast and Baltimore plant contrasts and urges better hiring policies.

A new sub-station for landlords to register living quarters with the federal rent control office will open tomorrow. Riley Strickland, Amarillo area attorney-director, said forms will be available in the San Jacinto post office lobby in addition to the west end lobby of the federal building. Under an OPA ruling all rent houses, apartments and tourist courts must be registered by September 1. Patent terms have no legal effect.
Funeral services for Mrs Ida Elizabeth Hinders of Dalhart will take place at 2 p.m. Thursday in the Dalhart Catholic Church with Father Dolley officiating. The body will lie in Boxwell Brothers Chapel until 11 a.m. tomorrow. Mrs Hinders, 40, wife of L A Hinders of the Rock Island fuel department, is survived by her husband and eight children: Katherine, Nanette, Tresa Ann, Lawrence, Ben, John, Jimmie and Gerald.
Dick Jenkins of Amarillo turned in his earnings from a dice game and the loading gear after sheriff deputies raided a hotel room. Four gamblers were cleaned out as officers confiscated a drill, bits, loading bones, paint, calipers, a vice, and other tools. Jenkins pleaded guilty to gaming and paid seventy five dollars plus costs.

A Moscow broadcast cites W Averell Harriman saying Americans would join the Red Army on a front alongside Soviet forces. Harriman spoke for recording and was heard after arriving with Churchill on Aug 12. In Washington a July submarine torpedo attack on a small British merchant vessel in the Atlantic near South America was reported. survivors arrived at a Gulf coast port.

In California USO's Desert Battalion brings women volunteers to a Cochella desert outpost each weekend. About 2,500 soldiers visit 200 dancing 'privates' while 16 year olds, fatigues, and salt tablets mark the heat and effort. Mrs. Edward G Robinson leads the effort with strict rules and vows of sacrifice.
Absentee voting in Potter County signals strong election interest in the Saturday primary. Potter counts 501 votes versus 438 in the July 25 vote, with statewide turnout seen climbing toward a million. About 3,000 eligible Potter voters did not cast ballots in the first primary. L B Dutton acting British consul arrives in Amarillo by letter from Houston consulate. He plans an informal call with Rex Baxter of the Amarillo Chamber of Commerce to learn about the city and its growth, noting that a British consul has likely never visited Amarillo before.
A law banning liquor transport in wet areas without a permit will be tested on appeal from Potter County Court. The Sisk defendant was convicted, fined 100 dollars plus costs, and plans to appeal as a test case. A drunken driving statute change prompted county court tests with multiple convictions and dispositions as the term concluded.
