River War Ends NK Bridgehead on Naktong River

U. S. Marines and Army forces repelled a North Korean assault on the Naktong River front in Korea. A two day offensive neutralized the Fourth Division, with more than 1,000 enemy killed and the river red with blood as NK troops fled toward higher ground and the opposite shore. The last stand came atop a 10 mile ridge as air and artillery pounded the retreating forces.

North Korean Sixth Division Infiltrates Near Hamnan

In Korea near Hamnan on August 18, elements of the North Korean Sixth Division, seasoned by Red Chinese veterans, penetrated American lines under night and dawn conditions. The assault stretched west and east of Hamnan against units including the U.S. 35th Division.

Marines Finish Third Objective at Naktong River Ridge

Air Force crews reported destroying three enemy tanks in a daytime clash near the Naktong as Marines cleared all but the final objective. Enemy troops fled into western hills while one Army unit raced ahead and paused for an air resupply due to a stretched supply line.

Amarillo budget reveals executive branch funding details

The proposed fiscal year budget lists the mayor and city commission salaries at 1560 and major expenses totaling 8300. Motorcycle Rider Hurt in Collision Near North East Eighth

Dave Hamilton a 27 year old Earle Hotel resident was described as good at St. Anthony's Hospital after a motorcycle city bus crash last night in the 2600 block of North East Eighth. He suffered injuries to his right arm and leg and was transported by N S Griggs Sons ambulance.

Six new polio cases are being treated in Houston hospitals, raising the year’s total to two victims. The outbreak has caused 15 deaths overall.

FBI Spy Chase Reaches Texas

Sobell, a former Navy radar engineer, was arrested in Webb County Texas as the eighth American tied to a Soviet atomic spy ring. FBI agents questioned him in jail while Mexico relations remained unclear about links to a radio station in Chi huahua City. He fled to Mexico on June 22 after David Greenglass’s arrest, facing charges of aiding the spy network during 1942 to 1947 while with General Electric and Navy radar work.
