Patriots Clearing Frontier on the French Swiss Boundary

On the Haute Savoie frontier at Amne mass e near Lake Geneva a German garrison at St G ingolph surrendered to a Fighting French detachment. About 1000 German troops resisted in the Saleve district as France consolidates control with light artillery mortars and machine guns. Patriots from St Gingloph Evian and Thonon aided the move back French control with no reported casualties.

British Bombers Batter Berlin and Baltic Ports

Nearly 1,200 British aircraft struck Germany last night aiming at Berlin and the Baltic ports Stettin and Kiel, with Halifaxes and Lancasters delivering about 1,000 tons to each port while Mosquitoes dropped two ton bombs on Berlin for the third night. Weather limited the next day’s operations as American heavy bombers entered year three of the European air war.

Boyce Calls Public Meeting on Canadian River Flood Control

Philadelphia Transit System Restored to Owners

Maj. Gen. Philip Hayes returned control of the Philadelphia Transportation Company to its owners at 11 A M after troops who seized the strike-bound system on August 3 completed their mission. He said the Army would shift back to war duties fighting Japs and Germans.

American Casualties in France Total 112,673

Washington dispatch says American Army casualties in western France for the first two months of action totaled 112,673. Among them 16,434 were killed, 76,535 wounded, and 19,704 missing, announced acting secretary of War John J. McCloy.

Chinese Open Offensive Near Tungting Lake

Chinese troops launched a fresh offensive in the Tungting Lake area north and south of the Yangtze to disrupt the Japanese drive in Hunan. Heavy fighting raged around Hengyang as China sought to contain the Japanese push and protect the Han kow Canton railway corridor.

Allied inland advance in southern France near Toulon Cannes
