J Fred Smith a Dallas milling man and Highland Park's first mayor urged building vast silos to store 500000000 bushels of Federal Farm Board wheat. He said storage could lower price per bushel to about 70 cents and argued the government would save by building its own silos instead of paying private storage costs.
Violent earth tremors, strong enough to cause destruction, were recorded about 830 miles southwest of St. Louis. They were felt in El Paso, Las Cruces, and as far east as San Antonio, with injuries reported from Oaxaca, Mexico. Seismologists say tremors may be tail ends of a larger disturbance in Mexico.

Jack Dempsey filed a Reno divorce suit charging his actress wife Estelle Taylor with mental cruelty. Taylor said reconciliation hopes are gone and negotiations for a $100,000 property settlement have ended. She may sue in Los Angeles if Dempsey pursues Reno, and she plans to wait for his filing.
In Plainview Texas Panhandle officers joined a section wide search for Mar as Locke a 15 year old girl who vanished after leaving a friends house Friday. Two children reported seeing her at 3 PM on the streets while her parents fear she was kidnapped or ran away. A Vernon motorist reported spotting a girl matching her description in a blue coupe with a man Friday night.
At noon today Margaret Locke, 15, daughter of Mr and Mrs J H Locke of Plainview, remained missing after vanishing around 3 pm last Friday. Panhandle officers and local police had no clues. Seek any information to police or the girl's parents. She stands about 5 feet 2 inches, 110 pounds, and was last seen in a dark printed silk dress with a large lace collar and a blue necklace.
The estate of the late C T Herring filed in Amarillo shows net assets of 1 032 278 95 with liabilities of 24 884 72, following probate of the will. Appraisers J H Paul C R Garner and Ford Brandenburg prepared the inventory for County Clerk Ted Blackburn. Executors named are W E Herring and Les K Johnson.
Amarillo charity organization leaders and city county officials will meet at 10 o clock Tuesday in the chamber of commerce directors room to plan a census of the city unemployed. They will revise last winter’s lists and discuss job creation for heads of families as winter hardships approach.
Ann Arbor MIch Aug 17 Prosecutor Albert J Rapp announced that questioning the three torch slayers who killed and burned two young couples near here last Tuesday convinced him that Catherine Keller a friend of one of the slayers was not involved. Keller admitted being with the slayers earlier but left to keep another engagement.
In New York on August 17, the American Legion is accused of seeking subsidies and lobbyist gains while the Carnegie Foundation opposes tax exemptions for college football. Dr. Henry Pritchett denounces the idea of bonuses for veterans as unpatriotic and warns of the burden on the nation. He criticizes Legion leaders for raiding the treasury and contends colleges with football incomes should share government burdens.
Brig. Gen. Jacob F. Wolters imposed martial law in a 600 square mile oil region covering four counties. He ordered an immediate shutdown of 1600 producing wells and warned arrests for violations. No court martial trials for field violators. Troops from Houston San Antonio and Palestine arrived to enforce the orders.
Crude oil prices in Mid-Continent fields are expected to climb within 24 hours due to a military shutdown of East Texas Oklahoma City and Seminole producing areas. In Kilgore and surrounding East Texas towns troops enforce Governor Sterling's order to close oil wells after a price drop. The mood is upbeat among soldiers marching to the fields, with minimal clashes expected. One youth loss of two teeth is noted as the only casualty.
