Newport Tennis Classic Doubles Sparks Schroeder Victory

Ted Schroeder of La Crescenta California won the Newport Casino singles championship and appeared set for a Davis Cup berth after a 6-3 6-5 6-4 victory over Art Larsen. Budge Patty, Schroeder’s partner, aggravated an ankle and the top-seeded duo Talbert and Traber defaulted the doubles title. Patty’s injury forecasts a long layoff, clouding the doubles bid as well. Amarillo’s Gold Sox lost to Lamesa Lobos 6-5 in the series opener, with Jodie Beeler naming Fulis Rossen to start Monday as the Sox try to rebound on the road.
