Five Die in Crash of B-17 Bomber Near Berryton

An Amarillo man piloted the B-17 that crashed at the Berryton Grange fairgrounds killing five of seven crew members. First Lt. Dewey R. Laney, 25, of Amarillo, was the pilot. Two survivors were hospitalized in Topeka in fair condition.

Family Of Three Hurt In Crash In Albuquerque

A former Amarillo couple and their two children were injured in a Monday night automobile crash near Los Lunas New Mexico. Mrs Mason sustained serious injuries including a compound fracture of the right leg a broken right arm and jaw injuries. The husband and their son and daughter were taken to Presbyterian and St Josephs hospitals with varying injuries. The family had moved to Albuquerque from Amarillo several years ago.

John W. Gilliam Sr Dies in Fort Worth

John W. Gilliam Sr retired as Western Union superintendent in Amarillo in 1943. He was 72, died at his daughter’s Fort Worth home after traveling from Amarillo. Born November 7, 187? in Dallas, he served in telegraph work, held civic roles, and was a Masonic member. Surviving relatives include wife, two sons, a daughter, and several siblings. Funeral services are planned in Dallas.
