The Texas path to selling 3.2 beer is arduous with multiple elections and high taxes. Licenses cost 500 for manufacture 200 for wholesalers 50 for local distributors 100 for retailers plus federal taxes. Counties and cities can add up to 50 more in local taxes, making revenue go to schools and general funds.
Amarillo’s American Smelting and Refining Company plant expands to over 160 workers with 75 new hires. Management cites code requirements and increased capacity, plans full operation by year end, and notes many applicants but a preference for local workers. Nearby Great West Mill & Elevator adds workers. milling shifts run five days weekly under national code for millers.
Governor Miriam A Ferguson with Texas officials begins a campaign to issue state bonds to supplement Federal funds for relief. Mayors and county commissioners plan local meetings while warning that without Texas support no further Federal aid will follow the August allotment.
In Havana the general strike paralyzes supplies with milk bread and meat scarce. bombs kill a passer by and damages occur as army trucks move to feed the hungry city. Machado’s government declares a state of war and contemplates using force to end the strike while American mediation continues.
Hyde Park Aug. 100 Republican members of the foreign relations committee back President Roosevelt policy on the Cuban crisis. A sharp presidential note warned Machado to restore tranquility or face consequences as the nation weighs non intervention against possible economic aid to stabilize Cuba.
Hiram Thompson a furloughed inmate from the state penitentiary was shot dead in front of a city park across from the municipal building in Temple. Three shotgun blasts from a brown Ford sedan killed him instantly as the car headed toward Belton. Thompson had previously been tried three times for a Belton skating rink slaying and sentenced to 29 years. He was on furlough to attend his sister’s funeral in Waco. Will Fewell, father of Thompson’s alleged victim Carlton Fewell, was questioned by county attorney James K. Evetts after the shooting.
Pallas August 10. An emergency tax relief conference will meet in Dallas on August 19 to launch a statewide effort for a general retail sales tax. The gathering was authorized at a recent Austin meeting of taxpayers legislators and officials. A committee including Mayor G H Zimmerman Waco Judge W C Baker Kerrville I B McFarland and Vance Muse was named to choose officers and arrange the Dallas meeting.
Rear Admiral Sinclair Gannon and Mrs. Gannon visited the Abilene home where they wed over 30 years ago. En route to San Diego after his illness, Gannon returns to active sea duty. He was promoted from captain and was appointed to the naval academy in 1896 by Congressman J W Cockrell. He married Cockrell’s granddaughter, Miss Della Triplett, in the congressman’s home.
The State Railroad Commission authorized Rock Island Railway to replace motor car trains one and two with mixed train service on the Waxahachie to Teague route, effective immediately.
New York dispatch notes Harvey O Connor’s biography of a fortune titled Mellons Millions. It portrays Andrew W Mellon rising from poverty to dominance in finance and industry, with political power, diplomacy, and recent probes cited. The piece cites a federal trade commission report calling a Mellon company a monopoly and a White House counter may imply fallout.

J N Shelton 82 a Merkel pioneer dies at his daughter's home after his wife Mrs W M Elliott dies five days earlier. Mrs Shelton 74 died last Friday. her funeral followed as he passed away last night from grief.
Ace Hudkins the former Nebraska boxer was reported out of danger by his physician Dr O Reilly after being shot twice in a Sunday night brawl. The bullets were removed and two blood transfusions given at a Los Angeles hospital.
Oklahoma City reports a total of 199620 dollars paid to kidnappers for Charles F. Urschel’s release. Banks nationwide hold 9981 serial numbered tens from the Kansas City Fed, labeled ransom money but no single case tied to Urschel. Hoover warns the note refers to ransom in various hold ups, not exclusively Urschel.
United States Steel Corporation reported unfilled orders fell by 86 546 tons in July to 2 020 125 tons. The July decline followed a June backlog rise of 176 856 tons, the largest since early 1930, with Wall Street analysts predicting a slight change overall.
On August 8 the Treasury reports receipts of 9,246,372.67 and expenditures of 10,504,551.94, leaving a balance of 787,431,467.34. Customs receipts for the month total 7,443,467.27. For the fiscal year since July 1, receipts are 229,676,159.11 and expenditures 377,286,678.97, including 115,128,404.43 for emergency relief, resulting in an excess of 147,610,519.86.
Postmaster W S Kenyon reports about 200 more NRA Blue Eagle emblems arrived in Amarillo as sales loom. Officials expect more display cards and blanks for consumers statements of cooperation, with 250 to 300 certificates of compliance on file at the post office. Horace Russell of the NRA council notes no new developments at the morning meeting. He urges readers to keep a copy of The Globe News NRA edition for broader NRA reading.
Two hundred town directors of the West Texas Chamber of Commerce in Stamford Texas vote this week on the proposed $20 million state bond issue for relief. After ballots, a policy statement will be issued. the May convention memorialized the Legislature to submit the issue to the electorate but did not take a stand.
Two arrests have been made in a Kansas municipal bond scandal. At least 658000 dollars in forged bonds have been found and three state banks closed. Officials say eight forged bond issues totaling 329000 dollars were duplicated, with one set used for state deposits and another in Chicago brokers’ hands. The treasury vault was guarded by National Guard soldiers during inquiries.

Fullingim and Robert Ricks are appointed to the Potter County Texas Home Owners' Loan Corporation unit with John R. Fullingim serving as attorney and Robert Ricks as appraiser. Both are longtime local figures with Democratic backing. Ricks operates the Amarillo based Robert Ricks Realty Co since 1927 and previously worked with Brewer Ricks and Atwood Realty. Fullingim belongs to the law firm Dorenfield Simpson Foster & Pullingim and has practiced here since 1926.
Rochester news reports more than 200 persons arrested as state troopers and deputy sheriffs stop striking dairy farmers attempting to dump milk. Seventy five arrests occurred in Tioga County and a milk truck en route to Binghamton was thwarted by troopers under Capt. Daniel Fox.
The recovery administration announced a ruling that all privately owned utilities must come under the wage and hour supervision. The decision marks a major development amid hearings on codes for coal and other industries as Administrator Hugh S. Johnson awaits word from retailers and grocers on his demand that store hours not be shortened to avoid hiring more workers.
