Publican state headquarters in Dallas discussed potential GOP nominees for governor at the Texas state convention set for September 14 in Fort Worth. Among the named Timers are W. H. Holmes of Anna and Colonel Haines, with Holmes previously the Republican nominee for lieutenant governor and a Panhandle oil man noted in GOP circles.
The Joy Ride, newest amusement at the Tri-State Fair grounds, draws growing crowds as Amarillo Tri-State exposition shows a tidy profit. Adults pay 10 cents and children 5 cents to ride, with cars driving the course in safety. The ride operates continually on the fair grounds and is echoed as a forerunner among city amusements nationwide.
Ed Summers, alleged escapee from the Arizona penitentiary, arrested near Plainview and moved to Potter County jail, was slated for return to Plain at 2 o clock this afternoon. Summers and three others face formal charges in connection with safe burglaries in Amarillo.
Wheat prices fell sharply at the open with early trades down about 5 to 6 cents per bushel. The drop followed a government 1928 domestic wheat production estimate larger than expected and broad selling pressure in Chicago. Corn also declined, with new crop deliveries dropping to season’s lows, while buying by some speculators helped steady the market.
Tupelo Mississippi representative John Rankin said he would wire the Department of Justice to investigate two cotton crop reports by the crop reporting board. He cited a 10 percent discrepancy in estimated condition with one report labeled skeleton showing 59.7 percent and another at 67.0 percent, both listing 14 301 900 bases.

The record heat wave will continue to claim lives in the mid west with twelve deaths in and near Chicago due to heart stress from extreme heat and humidity. Cooling winds from Manitoba are expected to ease the three day heat spell tonight. Maximum temperatures reached record highs in the southwest with Phoenix and Yuma reporting 112 and 114 degrees.
The excursion steamer Nantasket and the fishing boat Isabelle Parker collided in Boston Harbor. No lives were lost or reported injured though 20 crew members on the Nantasket faced danger as both ships leaked badly and reached Gallup's Island for aid.
Nine United States Army planes from Kelly Field San Antonio refueled at Amarillo Airport Corporation English Bivins field this morning en route to Colorado Springs for a National Guard airport dedication. Four planes had already visited yesterday with six Curtis Paltons and three artixc Hawks in the group. A ground loop damaged a Palton piloted by Lieuts Robinson and Dean, and one wheel was smashed. Large crowd witnessed landings and takeoffs as the Falcons circled town and the Hawks skimmed the field.
Storm-bringing rains sweep southern Georgia after Florida damage. Flood waters threaten the large Inglis dam on the Withlacoochee River as officials monitor the situation overnight. J. Jamison of Florida Power reports the outlook is troubling.
Three Plainview individuals A. J. Chambers 55 Eunice Chambers and Alma Stovall perished when a flood swept their car at Dark Canyon half a mile south of Carlsbad New Mexico. Rescue efforts continued for the missing bodies as the flood widened the stream.
Herbert Hoover will deliver his acceptance speech tomorrow afternoon at six o clock Pacific time in Palo Alto California. The speech will be broadcast by WDAG Amarille at six o clock Amarille time.
A chain of prisoners was to be moved from Potter County jail to Huntsville state prison after noon today led by penitentiary agent Bud Russell. Five inmates were convicted locally and four from nearby counties. Sentences range from two to ten years for hijacking theft robbery with firearms forgery and theft from person.
Mary and Margaret Gibbs eleven year olds in Holyoke Mass may be separated by an operation in a West Park Hospital study. Dr Francis P Weston notes months of study and weighs advisability of severing their conjoined bodies. Past attempts to separate such twins have failed or killed both.
Sinclair Lewis novel on stage at the Playhouse drew crowds and lively reactions. Sharon Falconer exhorted the audience as evangelists rallied attendees, while Elmer Gantry confessed sins from the stage amid growing audience fervor and a disruptive interlude.
