One Man Shot and Two Beaten in Drive-In Battle

Ed ward H Bruce 25 charged with assault with intent to murder after a shooting at the Jeeper Drive-In near West Tenth. Robert L Johnson 35 in serious condition with a lung injury. Mrs Melva Fae Johnson 27, wife of Johnson, and Woodie Watkins 36 were involved witnesses and victims. Bruce surrendered later with the weapon, a .32 pistol, to police. Justice of the Peace set no bond.

Truman Prepares Security Measure

Speaker Rayburn said President Truman may send an anti sabotage message to Congress later. After meeting with Barkley Lucas and McCormack Rayburn did not share details. He noted the message concerns security sabotage and Communists and likely requests additional legislation.

The Amarillo region expects sunny to warm conditions with isolated night showers and highs near 94 to 95 degrees. West Texas will be clear to partly cloudy with scattered thundershowers in the Panhandle and South Plains, little temperature change. Two Escape After Robbery Wounding of Bandits by Dallas Police

Dallas police wounded one bandit and pursued two others after a daytime robbery at a Preston Hollow home. Officer Grinnell exchanged fire, a getaway car fled, and Flemming Van Derrick, 33, of Chickasha Oklahoma, was captured with knee wounds. A second suspect escaped as officers combed the area with rifles and found weapons including an M 3 grease gun and carbines.

Warships Promised France Under U S Aid Plan

France will receive its first two U S war ships August 12 in Philadelphia under the foreign military aid program. The 1,240 ton destroyer escorts Samuel F. Mills and Riddle will be renamed Arabe and Kabyle. France is the second recipient after the Netherlands.

Amarillo School Board Approves New 113 Room Elementary

Amarillo Independent School District trustees approved a $2.5 million building program and a $2.8445 million 1950 51 budget. Plans include a 113 room North Amarillo elementary with bids Aug 28 and an Avondale school to be built west of Avondale.

Renew Push On Red Hue In Korean War Updates

Tokyo reports American F-80 jets attacking Seoul targets and rail yards while bombing runs hit pontoon bridges along the Han River. General MacArthur says Red Korean flak is heavy and accurate as B-29s strike Pyongyang Wonsan and Seoul fronts. Fifth Air Force notes 550 sorties with 419 by its pilots.

UN forces renew Seoul front clash in across river push

Allied and South Korean units reported heavy combat as Red forces crossed the Naktong River threatening Taegu. The New Front extended toward Chinju and Pohang on the east coast while US Marines pressed toward Kosang and Chinju from the south. Casualties mounted as Task Force Kean and 24th Division fought to clear bridgeheads and slow the Red drive along the peninsula.

Five Days of Heat Ahead for the Area

The region faces continued hot weather with temperatures about four degrees above normal for five days. High yesterday reached 92, with 95 forecast for tomorrow. A few isolated night thunderstorms are possible but moisture remains scant. The five day outlook includes light, scattered rainfall and several area towns report varied weekly rainfall totals.

Paris August 8 Finance ministry sources said France is negotiating a 225 million dollar loan with a group of American banks.

UN Counters Red Charges In Korean War Reports

The United Nations Commission on Korea issued a report denying North Korean charges of barbarous war methods. It notes North Korea’s pledge to honor the Red Cross treaty and says South Korea and Gen. Douglas MacArthur’s command cooperated with Red Cross observers. The panel urges Security Council support for Red Cross supervision.
