Guinea Pigs Give Lives In the Battle
The Amarillo city health lab uses about 200 guinea pigs annually to test virulence of diseases and identify illnesses. Jack Wyatt notes a range of sizes from mouse to full grown, with colors white to black, no tails or small ears. They are fed oats and greens and used in Wasserman tests for diphtheria typhus and relapsing fevers, often destroyed after experiments. Sheep are also used, about 12 yearly, but not killed. their blood serum serves as culture media in many tests.
