Port Arthur Plans Thanksgiving Service After Severe Hurricane

Port Arthur escaped major disaster as the tropical storm battered Southeast Texas for hours. The town reported no deaths, with damage initially estimated at 500 000 but later trimmed to about 100 000. Crop losses were heavy across Jefferson County, and two people were hurt in nearby Beaumont. Weather shifted inland with rain and wind easing, while cleanup began amid debris and downed trees.

A First Lady And a Guild For Newsmen

Mrs. Roosevelts column prompts debate over eligibility for the American Newspaper Guild. Massachusetts hens lay over 254 million eggs in half of 1940.

He cited large unfilled orders and strong consumer buying, with inventories not far from March peaks and no significant new buildup. Prices for commodity and security assets fell due to international tensions, yet domestic conditions remain solid and defense spending could lift per capita consumption to new records.
