Objector in Army Favors Gun Over Axe
Clifford M. Thrush a 25 year old former Alma Michigan clerk says he is not a fighting man yet would rather carry a rifle. The army tentatively accepted him for service at Camp Grant Illinois relieving him of work at the conscientious objector camp near Manistee. He said he told his draft board he was not much for fighting but did not expect to be sent to such a camp where the work involved 44 hours a week of wood chopping. Thrush entered the Manistee camp June 27 and after three weeks asked for regular army training.

Two Soldiers Fatally Shot in Bus Clash at Fort Bragg
In Fayetteville, North Carolina, Aug 6, two soldiers were killed and six wounded on a private bus carrying 25 to 30 black troops en route to Fort Bragg. Sgt Edwin L. Hargraves and Pvt Ned Turman died. Pvt Allen E. Katzman was seriously injured. A board of inquiry was ordered as MPs were told to refrain from discussion.
