Youth Center Burglary Suspects Flee In Sedan Night Escape

Officers report a burglary at the youth center where a safe and money are missing. A car used in the getaway was identified by teen witnesses, with partial descriptions provided. Mrs. Groves from 608 Carolina alerted police at about 12:15 AM after hearing noises and seeing burglars load items into a two door sedan. The escape involved a rapid U turn and gear grinding as the suspects fled. Police say the safe and money have not yet been recovered.

West Point Dismisses 90 Cadets For Honor Code Violations

The Army cashiered ninety West Point cadets for violating the Code of Honor by accepting outside help to pass tests. No names were released. Secretary Pace approved the action based on a board chaired by Gen. Collins. members included Judge Learned Hand and other senior officers.

Army Football Team Nearly Wiped Out by Cadet Discharges

Gen J Lawton Collins told Senate Armed Services Committee that 90 West Point cadets were discharged, effectively wiping out the Army football squad. Senators, including acting chairman Harry Byrd, expressed shock and concern over national morale and the honor system fallout.

General James H. McCormack Jr chief liaison for military applications of atomic energy toured the Pantex AEC project east of Amarillo with Walter Stagg and other officials. Also present were R B Jewell and R H Kellogg. He planned visits to Santa Fe and Los Alamos and attended a Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Amarillo Club.

Bus Service To Palo Duro State Park Approved

The Texas Railroad Commission approved bus service to Palo Duro State Park with first trips tentatively set for late August. Continental Panhandle Trailways holds the certificate of public convenience and necessity for Amarillo and Canyon routes to the park, with fares of 1.00 each way from Amarillo and 0.50 from Canyon. The initial run will reach the third canyon creek crossing, then later routes will traverse the full park. The National Tour Bureau of Chicago will launch a national publicity drive for the park.

Federal Judge Wilson Dies After 28 Years on Bench

James C. Wilson, long associated with justice in the Northern District of Texas, died in Cook Memorial Hospital Fort Worth shortly before 1 30 this morning at age 77. He served from 1919 to 1947 chiefly as a federal district judge and remained available in retirement. He valued mercy in sentencing and supported probation, keeping a dignified courtroom and guiding lawyers to efficient trials. Born in Palo Pinto County Texas he lived in Fort Worth and Amarillo during his career, with a Texas Ranger father noted in his family background.

Poles Escape Red Gunfire in Plane

Four Polish refugees including a woman landed a bullet riddled improvised plane near Malmo after a gunfight with guards as they fled communism. They claimed asylum in Sweden and described a 10,000 foot sprint from pursuing aircraft before landing at Bulltofta.
