The Pontchartrain served as the enemy fleet while signal corpsmen activated two colossal searchlights and a hidden ray device from Fort Monmouth. The test demonstrated coast defense capability with a claimed accuracy of 59 miles and potential reductions in loss if real.

A driving downpour began at 2 pm delivering up to a quarter inch in the first 15 minutes and a mild electrical storm accompanied by strong winds. Jilted suitor questioned in brutal nurse murder case

Mandeville W. Zenge, 26, from Canton Missouri, is questioned in Chicago over the slaying of Dr. Walter J. Bauer. He denied involvement, crying that he loved Louise Bauer and wanted her to be happy. Bauer, a Michigan graduate and University of Michigan professor, was abducted in Ann Arbor and taken to Chicago for the killing.

The New Rex Opens Tonight in Amarillo

The Rex Theater at West Sixth Avenue and Virginia debuts at 5 45 PM with no opening price increase. Tickets cost 25 cents lower floor 15 cents balcony and a dime for children. Starring Janet Gaynor and Lew Ayres Servant's Entrance, the new building seats 525 on the main floor and 350 in the balcony, making it one of Amarillo's largest venues.

Conchas Dam Caucus Sets Sunday Meeting at Tucumcari

A caucus of Conchas Dam sponsors and Bell Ranch officials is planned for Sunday in Tucumcari, where Arch Hurley says plans for a large dam project will be announced. Captain Hans Kramer and engineers report preliminary work underway, with 4 000 workers expected by November and completion in about 20 months.

Houston Attorney Faces Murder Charge in Madisonville Slaying

M. M. Riedel a 36 year old Houston attorney was charged with murder for the killing of Luther Broadway a 40 year old former county judge in a Madisonville hotel room where Riedel said he found Broadway with Mrs. Riedel Bond was tentatively set at 5000 dollars and Co J Gusta of Madison County the father of Mrs. Riedel arranged to obtain sureties.

Amarillo Guardsmen Headed for Gulf Coast Training

Nearly 300 Amarillo Texas National Guard members boarded a Santa Fe train for Gulf Coast training. The infantry units, field artillery personnel, and band departed in orderly formation with command staff aboard, joining later at Canyon and Snyder to assemble a 450-strong contingent bound for Camp Hulen and return Sunday, August 18.
