Shortage of Doctors At State Sanatorium
SAN ANGELO Aug. 1 The prevailing doctor shortage is being felt at McKnight State Sanatorium as four full time and two part time specialists care for 644 patients. Each physician treats about 150 patients, far above the 50 to 75 recommended. The staff includes several full time and part time doctors with bed rest central to treatment and radical options like streptomycin, PAS, and surgery reserved for non responding cases. The waiting list is at a low five, with new patients expected after counties were added to the service area. Sanatoriums staff includes 32 graduate nurses with a capacity for more. The facility, once Texas' sole TB hospital, is reinforced by nearby institutions in Tyler and Mission.
