In Chicago today the gangland underworld booked "Bad Luck" Corrine Griffith for a ride while she faced pursuit by both gunmen and authorities. The widow of a criminal and sweetheart of gangsters was targeted as police and mobsters hunted her.
The Globe notes Arthur Brisbane on Washington heat and Hoover era policy. It reports a suicide and a drowning in New York, asks if spirits travel across space, and warns Corning Missouri faces erosion as the Missouri River undercuts the town. It cites Professor Guillain on cocktail deaths and criticizes intoxicant froth in France and Britain.
J W Bill Allard filed a district court suit against News Globe Publishing seeking 10000. He claims The Globe and The News published libelous reports April 16 17 asserting he was convicted of aggravated assault after a dice game loss. He seeks 5000 for reputational harm and 5000 for mental distress.
A $4,800 lawsuit filed against Southwestern Public Service seeks damages for 10 year old Jacec Dodds of Carson County burned by a high voltage wire at the San Jacinto power transformer. The petition asks $3,000 for injuries, $1,300 for hospital bills and lost labor, and $500 for mother’s bedside attendance and distress citing negligence for allowing access.
Miss Eleanor Merry of Culver City California sues aviator Loren Mendell for 28370 damages after a forced landing injuries as a passenger. The $14000 plane given Mendell and co pilot R B Reinhart has been attached pending settlement of the case.
Postal receipts in Amarillo for July totaled 28293.07 dollars, up 4246.01 from July 1928 and 4699.70 from July 1927, according to post office figures.
Chicago police and an undercover agent disrupted a long running bombing syndicate that supplied pineapples to multiple cities. Twelve leaders jailed with more arrests anticipated as a raid at the gang’s headquarters yielded four bombs and cash payments totaling over $540. The operation targeted James Belcastro, Angelo Lucci, and other key figures in a crime ring that sold bombs for ten to 150 dollars, with extras for tossing or planting.
The French steamship Dalby reported sighting the Graf Zeppelin over the Mediterranean today between Marseilles and the Balearic Islands at about 41.28 N 3.20 E, roughly fifty miles off.

Clarence Williams is held on a 7500 bond after an examining trial for the fatal stabbing of C C Hill Jr at the rodeo grounds on July 4. Witness T B Rutledge testified Williams and Hill argued after Hill attacked. Williams did not testify.
The school district fixes the tax rate at 85 cents and raises the 1929-30 assessment by five cents from last year. Projected expenses total about 580000 for the coming year with revenue of 444500 from the district and 116000 from the state fund. Budget items include 375000 for teachers salaries 25000 for sites 20000 for building maintenance and 16000 for equipment. Bonds outstanding total 1557000 with a sinking fund of 104125 and interest at 77000. Interest from bonds will total 3100 leaving 101600 to be raised by 16 cent tax.
Special invitations go to Western Oklahoma real estate boards urging delegations to Texas Realtors convention to be held August 12 13 and 14. Committees race to complete plans for welcoming delegates from Texas Eastern New Mexico and Western Oklahoma. Transportation seeks more cars for trips to Borger and Palo Duro Canyon. Attendance is poised for a record session with many cities announcing their orators.
Fort Worth August session of the Interstate Commerce Commission nears conclusion after 49 witnesses. Proposals from Chicago Rock Island and Gulf, Frisco, and Fort Worth and Denver seek new lines, trackage rights, and acquisitions in Texas Panhandle and Dallas markets with multi‑million dollar costs.
Telegrams from Amarillo citizens and civic groups are to be presented to a Washington committee hearing on a proposed transcontinental air mail route from New York to Los Angeles. The route had been planned to pass through Tulsa and then west, bypassing Amarillo. The Amarillo chamber of commerce aviation committee drafted messages urging that Amarillo be added to the route.
Six business buildings in Quinlan Texas were destroyed by a daytime fire of undetermined origin. The loss was estimated at $100,000 with three general merchandise stores two cafes and a warehouse burned. Fire units from Greenville and Terrell assisted.
Bill Morris and Ra G Allen, both of Pampa, escaped serious injury when their Spartan biplane destined for Abilene crashed near Sweetwater. Morris misidentified Santa Fe lake for Lake Abilene, landed in a cotton field to conserve fuel, and damaged the undercarriage and tail. Neither man was seriously hurt. Allen continued to Austin after chartering a Texas Flying Service plane.
Two persons were killed and a third believed fatally injured in a series of automobile accidents in San Antonio yesterday. Antonio Moreno, a year-old Mexican youth, was killed when run over by a car driven by a Black man. Robert Harding, apartment house manager, died in a collision. Harding's car was struck as another vehicle sped toward the bedside of A. W. Van Cleave, dying at a hospital.
Lowell Yerex is named field manager and division superintendent for Texas Air Transport at the Amarillo Municipal Airport. Lieut. Robert H. Gray, assistant general agent and operations chief, relieves Garza A. Wace after several weeks in charge. Yerex, an early Amarillo flyer who first visited in 1924, and Gray are longtime local aviation pioneers who grew up as friends in New Zealand.
Special AP correspondent Herbert Siebel aboard Graf Zeppelin reports a cheerful breakfast hour at nine after sunrise. The craft passed Lyons at 11 10 p.m. French time and maintained a 60 mph pace. Lunch featured soup salmon venison potatoes bread candied fruit. By noon the voyage crossed Valence with a menu including Marseilles and Gibraltar references.
The Graf Zeppelin sails down the Rhone valley toward the Mediterranean on a southward course from South France toward Gibraltar. The weather bureau in Washington reports neutral winds along the current route, predicting no strong head or tail winds toward Bermuda from the Spanish coast.
