Boston reports Maj. Andere W Brewster of the FIRST CORPS AREA outlines a defense plan returning to revolutionary methods. Troops would gather locally near homes for training, feeding and shelter, with replacements from fellow citizens. The approach emphasizes family towns and state responsibility, preserving reserves to mobilize after regular troops.
Crawfordsville Arkansas reports three deaths when a newly bought plane wrecks in flight during a loop. Pilot Barney Schull 26 of Laurel Mississippi and Charles Hedrick 26 of Louise Mississippi perished along with Audrey Oates 19 of Vincent Arkansas. The craft, purchased in Houston Texas, fell in a cotton field near spectators.
Chicago crime commission reports a murder a day during June and July as preparations begin for an anti crime council conference. The city recorded 205 homicides in the first 213 days of the year.

Chicago August 1. Defense witness Dr William A White states Leopold Jr and Loeb were driven by infantile components in the murder of Robert Franks. He says Loeb yielded to materialistic theory while Leopold advanced it and feels himself deteriorating. Judge Caverly overrules state objections allowing alienist testimony in mitigation of punishment.
The Panhandle Lumber company received approval to raise its capital stock by 200000 to 700000 from the Texas corporation commission in Austin. The move reflects expanded business and more yards purchased, with Panhandle owning twenty four yards. Leaders include A C Houston of Wichita Kansas as president and J E Hill of Amarillo as vice president and general manager, and E H Petty of Amarillo as secretary and local yard manager.
The Globe lists winners from last Sunday's spelling contest with first prize to Mrs I M Holt of 307A North Pierce Street, second to Mrs Mabel Gordon Bishop of 1510 Taylor Street, and third to Maurine Nisbett of 806 Jackson Street. Twenty two words were misspelled and many lists had twenty or twenty one. Checks go out today.
Phillips Petroleum of Ranger seeks permit to manufacture carbon black from waste gas of casing head plants in Eastland County Pioneer district. Hearing set for August 11. several Texas firms already produce carbon black from gas waste. Public hearing noted as law prohibits use of live gas for this process.
The Idaho forest fire near Big Eddy on the Payette river east of Smith's Ferry spread quickly under strong winds and arid conditions. About 160 firefighters, including three injured by rock and falling trees, battled the blaze started by locomotive sparks from Tuesday night.

Chicago August 1 search is under way to locate nearly fifty Grace Episcopal pewholders who hold absolute title to land under their seats from deeds dating 1872 to 1875. Chief Justice Fuller, then a lawyer, drafted deeds giving owners of a pew a 11 190th part of church property. Title experts call the case unusual and without parade.

Judge W E Gee told the American Business club that there are workers and wrecking crews. He urged voters to support a sensible government and jury system.
