A slow steady rain through last night and this morning left from half an inch to an inch and a half of moisture over the Panhandle region. Growers say the wheat crop is virtually made and pastures will improve. rain stretched from Tucumcari to Sayre and south to Lubbock with heavier amounts between Hereford and Clovis.
Rep Walter Beck expects Senate State Affairs Committee to vote favorably on the Trinity River navigation bill despite strong opposition from Dallas and Fort Worth business leaders. The measure passed the House by nearly two to one amid objections over water usage and related concerns.

The king and queen of Siam visited Washington D C calling on President Hoover and Mrs. Hoover at the White House. A state dinner awaited them that evening while officials and diplomatic heads met the royal party. The king’s health curtailed trips to Mount Vernon and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and a radio address was dropped.
The stock market fell further after the United States Steel quarterly report. Bethlehem Steel shed four dollars to a five year low, Westinghouse Electric dropped sharply to a low since 1924, and several issues including American Telephone and Allied Chemical lost three to five dollars per share. The decline remained orderly with occasional 1 dollar rallies.
Floyd E. Fowler, revival singer and brother of Rev. H. E. Fowler of Grand Avenue Baptist Church, was fatally struck by a car driven by J. T. Sanders of Dallas near his own vehicle in Dallas just before midnight last night.

The Texas House rejected the automobile drivers license bill by 54 to engross and 66 against, tabling it after reconsideration. If enacted, drivers would have needed licenses issued between September and December for a nominal fee. Rep. Jos. McGill urged safety benefits amid concerns over reckless driving and repeat fines.
Bryan Untiecht, hero of the Colorado blizzard bus tragedy, arrives at the White House with a small camera to spend a day and night as guest of President Hoover. He helped keep 21 children active after the bus froze, five of whom died.
A quake hit three districts of Nakichevan and Trans-Caucasia causing at least 100 deaths or injuries. Several villages were wiped out and many houses destroyed. The Trans-Caucasian government immediately organized relief.
The Amarillo Chamber of Commerce sent wires to senators and representatives urging defeat of the Trinity River waterways bill now before the Legislature. It argues the canal would injure nonbordering cities and raise freight rates statewide, benefiting only Fort Worth Dallas and coastal intermediates.
The proposal to fund a nine foot barge channel from Galveston Bay to Dallas Fort Worth faces opposition over potential rail tonnage loss and rate increases elsewhere. Proponents say waterways history differs. Critics question authority over the stream en route to the bay. A preliminary body would call a local tax election to fund initial work for possible federal construction. The tax district covers Fort Worth and Dallas metro areas.
The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed two death penalties for Ira McKee of Dawson County and Joshua Riles of Galveston County. McKee killed a store robbery victim W. R. Billingsley at Sparenburg. Riles was convicted of criminal assault. The court reversed M. K. Simmons from Fayette County and remanded for the third time for a 50 year sentence. It declined to lower bail for John Belflower, charged with murder in Wheeler County.
Amarillo fire department members fear an opposition rumor or low mood as no alarms have been received since Friday afternoon. Assistant Chief Chester Moore and Captain Sherill Burks of Station Sixteenth Avenue return Wednesday from a three day fire training session in College Station.
The board will decide Friday if the Chamber of Commerce will fund an instructor to move the 142nd Infantry band from Brownwood to Amarillo. Proponents say without an instructor the band may be stationed in Sweetwater. Sweetwater has agreed to cover salaries if moved.
City commissioners moved to receive bids on the gas distribution system Friday night May 8 with weekly cash payments. The change, made at a special session, extends bid time to aid contractors in securing prices for regulators and studying plans. The city with G M Dunne and associates of Wichita will finance via revenue bonds, excluding the Amarillo Gas Company rate dispute. Griggs ambulance, Phone 4311.
Frank Roddy of Amarillo was wounded slightly when police say he was caught burglarizing a Phillips filling station in Roswell New Mexico late Tuesday night. Roswell officers seized a car used by the suspects and three men fled the scene. Roddy had prior liquor law convictions and prison time. he was released on bond after an appeal.
Heavy rains reduced attendance as 500 Odd Fellows and Rebekahs from the Panhandle Association converged on Borger Texas for the last day of their annual meeting. Officers were to be elected this afternoon and evening. J Shaffer of Texline served as retiring president with Parsma's team leading degree contests followed by Shamrock and Borger.
Mrs Whitelaw Reid, prominent New York society leader, died today at Saint Jean Cap Ferrat at the home of her daughter Lady Ward. The body will be returned to New York for burial.
San Antonio unveils a $315 special train to Mexico City with $315 reservations from the city, while Amarillo trains cost $150 and stop in multiple Mexican cities. The San Antonio trip runs May 16 to May 26, longer than Amarillo’s May 23 return, and includes rail fare, Pullman, meals, sightseeing, tips, and more. Officials say reservations are being taken at Globe News and the Chamber of Commerce.
