Hundreds of shouting students protested teachers' pay and reduced activities at Foley Square near City Hall. About 700 swarmed the area, with 2,500 more marching from across the city as patrols forced the crowd back. One student was arrested for pulling a horse’s tail.
The Amarillo Chamber of Commerce approved a 10 day cloud seeding experiment directed by Fort Worth seed and farm chemical salesman Jack B. Corn. He will plant silver iodide to induce moisture across the Texas Oklahoma New Mexico region, marking the first artificial rain effort here since 1947 when The News-Globe seeded Borger and Pampa with dry ice.
Dr. L. T. Green Jr., 42, of Muleshoe, was found beaten in a borrow ditch east of the city after picking up a hitchhiker. He was taken to St. Anthony's Hospital with head and facial injuries. about $150 cash and his 1950 blue Pontiac coupe were missing, and investigators work to learn more as he cannot speak.
The Sam Houston Junior High School presents a "Gay Nineties" revue at Municipal Auditorium tonight at 8 15. Box office opens at 7. Proceeds benefit the summer recreational program. Tickets are 1 80 dollars for reserved, 1 20 dollars for general admission, and 60 cents for students.
Eighteen lawmakers arrive by plane with an attorney, two clerks and an economist to learn about oil imports and domestic production. Two subcommittees from the House travel groups will tour Panhandle and Hugoton fields, raffinies, gas stations and related plants, with a chuck wagon luncheon at Moore County and dinners in Amarillo.
April 28 reports Hoover urged reorganizing the United Nations to bar Russia and satellites. Senators George Taft Kefauver and Hickenlooper weighed in, signaling broad GOP and Democratic support with caveats about maintaining contact with Russia. Moody disarmament and Atlantic Pact options were discussed.
Frank Erickson, a reputed major bookmaker, refused to answer senators about his gambling business citing constitutional rights. He admitted taking wagers from anyone but declined details on operations, locations, or associates after questioning by the Senate commerce subcommittee studying a bill to curb cross state gambling information. Aides and lawmakers pressed for details while Erickson retained his stance as the hearing progressed.
Amarillo planned goodwill trip to the South Plains and Eastern New Mexico is postponed indefinitely following an Amarillo Chamber of Commerce executive board meeting. President R Earl O Keefe said the trip will be held, with existing reservations held until a new date is set after the railroad firemen strike is settled.
Dr Frederick Joliot-Curie a Nobel prize winning scientist was fired today as France atomic high commissioner as coalition leaders ruled he threatened Western security. He is dismissed from the National Committee of Scientific Research and his removal ends his cross bloc influence. See FRANCE-Page 4.
Forecaster H. C. Winburn of the Amarillo Air Terminal reports stronger winds to come with cooler weather. Tomorrow’s high near 69 degrees and tonight’s low around 41, after a yesterday high of 66 and low of 43. Temperatures expected to run about two degrees below normal over the next five days, with cooler conditions this weekend and a warming trend by Tuesday.
In Sevierville Tennessee a 75 year old man saved his wife by throwing himself under their car as it rolled toward a 2000 foot mountain cliff in Great Smoky Mountain National Park. The rear wheel passed over him but the front wheel halted the vehicle. Doctors said he suffered only bruises and scratches.
The Buffalo Lake Fish Rodeo begins Sunday May 7 drawing a flood of anglers. Crappie run large with many evenings weighing about a pound, some over two pounds. Amarillo anglers flock to Conchas Lake and Texoma for crappie and bass as high winds limit boating but fishing remains strong. New Mexico lakes see trout open early and Lake McLellan yields plentiful crappie while Buffalo Lake starts prime bass and catfish action. White bass lure drives Panhandle trips as spring runs peak.
Weather Bureau reports considerable cloudiness across Amarillo and vicinity with warmer conditions this afternoon, cooling late tonight and Saturday. Winds will be strong Saturday. Temperatures show 86 high and 41 low today, 69 high expected tomorrow, with 66 high and 43 low for the 24 hours ending 6:30 this morning. West Texas remains partly cloudy with scattered thundershowers tonight and cooler Saturday. New Mexico sees fair today and warmer eastward, with showers and storms in northwest regions tonight and Saturday.
An Amarillo resident learns a baby born after 12:01 AM on April 1, 1950 will not be counted in the 1950 decennial census. Walter Shaller explains the rule. those who died after that date are counted, creating gaps for children born after the cutoff.
About 11:30 this morning a scaffold collapsed in the chapel of the old St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church at Ninth and Fillmore, injuring three carpenters. J P Youngblood 57 suffered severe head injuries and is unconscious at St Anthony Hospital. Taylor Holland 30 sustained a leg injury. Co Redman 63 from Tucumcari NM suffered possible rib fractures. Carl Sawyers escaped injury by jumping from the scaffold. The workers are employed by Wayne Sawyers contractor.
