Panhandle Population Estimates Stir Debate Before Census

Department of Commerce used 270,000 as a working basis for Panhandle hiring and earlier counts. Amarillo and other towns rely on utility meter indexes to estimate population, with quotients based on 1940 figures. Shaller notes fewer people per meter than 1940 causing overestimates, while 28 counties may gain about 30 percent, totaling 357,959 per chamber estimates.

Census Drive Enlists Amarillo to Reach Final Count

The 1950 census nears completion with about a dozen of 70 Amarillo enumerators left. Globe News will help reach uncounted residents within city limits and later readers outside Amarillo within the district. Forms request names addresses and basic demographics for April 1 residence. Two Escape Jail at Memphis in Hall County

Sheriff Earl Hill hunts for two Negro prisoners who fled Hall County jail last night aided by two outside accomplices. Suspects are James Hoskins 25 and Edward Simpson 48 with a getaway car described as a 1941 Chevrolet bearing 1950 Colorado plates. Investigators report the break occurred around 9 pm when accomplices took keys from the sheriff's residence.

Tito Signals Move to Restore Yugoslavia Greece Ties

Belgrade April 27 Premier Marshal Tito announced Yugoslavia will resume diplomatic relations with Greece and name an envoy within days. He urged improving relations with Greece, Italy, and Austria and said new developments in Greece may allow substantial progress. He also urged cooperation with Italy to ease Trieste disputes and boost economic ties.

Colorado weighs rain making to avert dust bowl threat

Airlines Combine Facilities Amarillo consolidation boosts efficiency for Pioneer and TWA

Pioneer Air Lines and Trans World Airlines announced a joint consolidation of operations in Amarillo with TWA taking over Pioneer's station operations and reservations. No service changes are planned. Pioneer serves Amarillo with six daily flights and connects at Clovis for Albuquerque and Santa Fe, while TWA will expand to a new westbound Constellation flight April 30. Amarillo remains linked to a 32500 mile route network through TWA since 1930.

96 year old man elopes with 64 year old bride in Mexico

In Long Beach California on April 27, David Van Dorn aged 96 said he eloped with 64 year old widow Camilla Barnard to Tijuana because he cannot live in restaurants. He formerly ran an apple orchard in Dayton Oregon and met her after she helped him up from a fall. He explained she needed a home and they chose to marry. A second item notes a mysterious ship with two red flags anchored off Luzon for six hours, later reported by the Defense Department.

Bandit surround near Rhome as fugitive Byrom hunted

In Texas, a posse of about 50 armed officers surrounded a Wise County farm area after reports that Lawrence Byrom, 21, crippled by arthritis, was seen nearby.
