Fired Prof Kills at Peru State Teachers College

Dr. B K Baker psychology professor at Peru State Teachers College shot and killed college president Dr. William Nicholas and instructor Dr. Paul Maxwell before killing himself. Nemcha County Attorney Fred C. Kiechel said Baker’s body was found at his home and a note beside him indicated motive. Nicholas and Maxwell died from three bullets each firing in their offices between 11 15 and 11 30 am.

Elevator Blast Fatal To Perryton Workman

Perryton April 24 Don Herring 28 died at Sanford Hospital at 12:24 this morning from burns after a dust explosion at Equity Elevator. Another victim Jim Woodward 21 was less hurt and improving. They were cleaning a grain unloading pit about 15 feet below ground when the blast—followed by a bulb explosion—shook the area. A second blast danger passed as inspectors assessed the site.

Johnson trial to top busy court month

Dist Atty Lloyd King expects a jury for the Ewald Johnson murder trial set for May 8 as 47th District Court braces for a hectic month. Judge Bishop denied a venue change and ordered a 500 member special venue. Special prosecutor George McCarthy predicts jury selection will take most of a week. The pair, John son and wife Diana, are charged in the June 22 Tex Thornton slaying.

Idle Workers Picket Lines at Local Plant

Local 77 CIO Communications Workers of America in Amarillo prepared for picketing at Southwestern Bell installations as a 43 state strike over a six member walkout at South Bend, Ind. The 40 Amarillo Western Electric workers voted unanimously to join the stoppage effective 8 this morning, with plans for further action if the general truce ends at midnight. Local unions in repair and traffic roles indicated support but had no instructions from St. Louis. uncertainty remained about next steps.

Delivery Cut Nears All Amarillo Areas

Delivery in Amarillo is limited to one daily trip for residential and most business areas with Saturday only one delivery. Parcel post also reduced to one daily delivery. Window hours shrink at North Amarillo and San Jacinto. main office unchanged. Some substitutes to be released gradually, no regular staff cuts expected.

High Union Official Hints at Postponement

General Counsel Peter Seitz travels to New York as the CWA considers delaying a wage demand package for 204,000 Bell Telephone workers. The executive board could order a postponement of 10 15 or 20 days or press on while negotiations continue. About 10 000 Division 6 members are on strike at Western Electric, with federal mediator Mills staying in talks for a possible settlement.
