In an interview with France Tireur Wallace advocates dedicating about 50 billion dollars immediately for world reconstruction. Rex Baxter Amarillo Chamber of Commerce secretary manager seeks quick War Assets Corporation inquiry to determine if Pantex Ordnance Plant buildings may be leased to wheat farmers for short term storage due to storage and box car shortages. Baxter sent a letter to Harry Holliday in Dallas regional office requesting investigation.
A contract signed in Pittsburgh raises daily wages by $1 for 140000 employees of U S Steel Corp subsidiaries. Management and CIO United Steelworkers representatives approved the agreement today.
Lewis E. Lawes 63 longtime Sing Sing warden died at his Garrison New York home after a 10 day illness. He rebuilt Sing Sing introduced novelties and fairness policy while supervising many executions and helped found abolitionist groups. He was 63 and survived by widow Elise and three daughters.
Lauritz Melchior rests in his Capitol Hotel suite awaiting breakfast as reporters wait in Los Angeles. Mrs. Melchior says the tenor needs rest before his 8 pm concert at Municipal Auditorium with the orchestra, tickets on sale at Panhandle Concert Bureau and box office.
HUAC chairman J Parnell Thomas announces he will bypass the attorney general and send a direct letter to President Truman urging prosecution of Communists. He says three letters to Clark failed to yield action and intends to press the case straight to the president.
The American delegation at Moscow reports abandonment of hope to finish the Austrian treaty this session and plans adjournment tomorrow. Even with Russian concessions on German assets the Americans doubt two more meetings could settle the remaining issues and clear the way for final decisions.

In Philadelphia two patrolmen were killed and a suspect critically wounded during an early morning gun battle as officers tried to arrest William Hallowell 23 for suspected auto theft. Hewitt and Quigley died of neck and heart wounds. Hallowell was injured and in poor condition.

In a House speech, Martin declares 10 000 wives and mothers of Aggies will oppose Gilcherist, claiming the wrath of women and boys will stop him. He blasts Gibb for flawed human relations and ends with Thou shalt not win.
