Safety Fails Cited After Fatal Pennsylvania Mine Blast
Investigators from the Pennsylvania Mines Department listed five safety failures at the Wilkes-Barre area mine where two blasts killed eight workers. Shortcomings included missed weekly inspections, entry despite absent foremen, no attendant at main doors, only one ventilating door, and insufficient ventilation to clear dangerous gases. A separate note reports Panama’s lottery ticket sales fell by $400,000 amid a national recession.

Chivalry Not Dead In City Rail Incident
Mrs Onalee Timmer of Grand Rapids says chivalry remains alive after a fall while running for a bus on a slip street. She limped home recounting how men stepped over her as they boarded the bus at 1400 South Arthur in Amario. Mrs Jones, Swedish war bride of Joseph P Jones, and Mrs Morin, Mexican native since 1912, are noted in the tale.
