CIO United Auto Workers leader Walter Reuther was wounded by a shotgun blast fired through a kitchen window of his Detroit home. Doctors at Grace Hospital said he would not lose his right arm, though radial nerve damage was uncertain. Nickel Subway Is Ruled Out in New York
New York mayor William O Dwyer announced a 10 cent fare for the subway and a 5 cent tariff for buses and trolleys, ending the 41 year old nickel era. Boy Survives Lye Ingestion Kept Alive At St Anthony
A three year old named Robert Heaton survived a caustic lye water ingestion after a year of illness. He initially drank the solution at age two and later developed esophageal stricture. Thieves Use Stolen Cars as Bulldozers
Juvenile car thieves are believed to use stolen cars as bulldozers in Amarillo. Two cars stolen last night were recovered damaged near Llano Cemetery and north of town after colliding with posts and barbed wire. One car, a 1948 model owned by Mr Norton of Hereford, and a 1986 DeSoto owned by J. M. Morrow were involved.
