Arthur Brisbane discusses Canadian prosperity and public ownership, compares power utilities and consumer rights, notes high emoluments and corporate concealment, laments American fortune and taxation while critiquing advertising prose and social behavior before mentioning a Texas grand jury probe into murder-for-reward schemes and a papal condemnation of an association of friends of Israel.
The forecast calls for unsettled, colder conditions tonight with partial clearing Thursday. Temperatures today ranged from 53 to 44 degrees, with 81 and 44 noted a year ago. Hourly readings span 44 to 53 degrees by morning and early afternoon. West Texas expects fair, colder in the Panhandle and warmer in the southeast. Oklahoma and Arkansas see partly cloudy to cloudy skies with colder tonight and Thursday, with regional variation.
Four states Illinois Nebraska Idaho and Oklahoma produced a sharp split in Republican and Democratic delegate counts. Lowden and Smith led Republican and Democratic ballots with Lowden accumulating 46 Illinois delegates and Smith securing 42 Illinois district delegates and eight at large. Nebraska split between Norris and uninstructed, Idaho named Borah delegates, Oklahoma supported Smith and Reed. Overall tallies place Hoover 174, Lowden 129, Norris 24, Borah seven, and Smith unstated for total delegates to date.
Presidential primaries in Illinois and Nebraska yesterday and party conventions in several states adjusted delegate tallies but did not alter the overall ranking. Hoover leads Republicans with 181 delegates, Lowden 130, Curtis 24, Norris 20, Borah 11, and 109 undecided. Democrats show Smith with 241, Reed 36, George 28, Hitchcock 16, and 58 undecided.
The Chicago Daily Tribune editorialized that Mayor William Hale Thompson would resign if State's Attorney Robert E. Crowe lost in the primary. The paper also denounced Frank Smith and accused State Senator Small of repudiation, suggesting political disgrace.
Chicago April 11 results show nominations for governor secretary of state and other posts. Republicans back Emerson Carlsstrom Glenn Swanson and Linday while Democrats choose Thompson Court ney Cermak Linday. Anton Cermak leads the wet faction in Illinois democracy.
An editorial proclaims Illinois purge of corruption as Chicago defeats Crowe and Thompson. It credits outraged citizenship for ending a corrupt machine described as gunning and plundering, calling April 10, 1928 a day voters rose in wrath and destroyed a vicious regime.
Representative Martin B Madden leads in the first Illinois congressional district as results show 53 precincts reporting. He trails a negro opponent 7 416 to 3 421 while Dawson touts the district as majority negro. Mayor Thompson campaigns in the Black Belt backing Madden noting Washington representation by a black man.
Clarence Williams of Williams Hardware was chosen president of the Panhandle Hardware and Implement association at the close of its three day convention. Homer Kirk of Floydada was elected vice president and L. Thompson of Canyon was re elected secretary treasurer for ninth term. Directors include B. Sherrard Lubbock Sid Nolen Canadian RK Royal Wellington L D Stith Amarillo H C Stoakes Paducah Hamp Williams Hot Springs Ark and Harold Bervig of the National Retail Hardware association. A Louisville and Nashville passenger train struck a school bus near Marbury Alabama yesterday killing 14 year old Donnie McCord and injuring 24 other children, several severely. Bus driver Edward Rogers said a box car on a sidetrack blocked his view. Emergency crews rushed victims to Birmingham hospitals as the bus was demolished.
With time growing short, tickets for the John Drinkwater presentation of Abraham Lincoln at the Auditorium are selling fast. Reserved seats from 50 cents to 2.50 are available at the Tri-State Fair association office, 30814 Polk street, for a six scene play portraying Civil War episodes and the assassination, featuring Grant Lee Seward Booth and others in the New York cast.
Dr. A. F. Lumpkin of Amarillo named president elect of the Panhandle District Medical Society with Dr. W. L. Baugh of Lubbock installed as president at the city hall meeting. Dr. Frizzell of Quanah elected vice president and Dr. J. J. Crume of Amarillo re elected secretary treasurer. Memphis will host the next association meeting in September as gynecology and surgery papers are discussed.
The First Pursuit group of U S Army planes will not include Amarillo in its current training itinerary. A telegram from Trubee Davidson assistant secretary of War in charge of aviation says the 35 planes will visit only army schools this trip, with Amarillo hoped for the next flight.
Denver oil man H M Blackmer again does not respond to a subpoena in the Sinclair Fall teapot dome case. Government seeks contempt after Blackmer’s absence in Denver while Everhart testifies about Liberty Bonds and cash for Fall’s ranch ventures. Next witness J E Benton of First National Bank at El Paso appears with undisclosed bank slips.
A panel of sixteen citizens is drawn by the jury commissioners to serve as grand jurors for the April term of the Forty seventh judicial district court in Potter County. The court opens at 9 o clock on April 25 after a three weeks recess. Names include J J Curry E C Lamb C R McAfee Ben Ansley H Gouldy H Durham B T Higginbotham M E Wedge I L Richardson W M McGough George P Milton G B E McDavid J V Moore J N Easterwood R FE Buran and A G Stanley. Judge Henry S Bishop will preside when the criminal court opens.
An indoor carnival with dancing games and music will be held at the Legion Home Friday at 8 o clock to feature Hanson Post American Legion. Sergt Ira C Barend says booths will be run by the Ladies Auxiliary and candy ice cream and soft drinks will be sold by members.
John B. Golding Post of Veterans of Foreign Wars will meet at the American Legion home at 8 o clock tomorrow evening. All members and those eligible are urged to attend to help finalize plans for a Veterans home to be established here.
Governor Dan Moody arrived in Houston for an all day harmony conference after leaving Austin. He announced strong public backing for the harmony movement from El Paso to the Sabine and from South Texas to the Panhandle. Moody planned to invite leaders in sympathy with Dallas's harmony effort and may throw the first pitch in the Texas league game that afternoon.
