Congressional leader Nicholas Longworth, longtime speaker in Washington, has died at a friend's home in Aiken South Carolina. Police report two burglaries in separate lines: a Piggly Wiggly at Line and Maryland and Fox Drug Store No 7 at 3522 Line. Tobacco and candy worth 20 dollars taken from the drug store. Burglars gained entry via rear doors, safe untouched in both cases. A purse snatching incident on West Tenth Avenue left Miss Elizabeth Harrison without $2, a $15 check and personal items, her assailant unidentified but nameable by the victim.
William H. Bush, 80, Chicago capitalist and miner of large helium deposits, died after a short illness. He pioneered in the Panhandle with Joseph F. Glidden, came to Amarillo in 1881, and held 200 sections in Potter and Randall counties. His Soncy helium field powered a major gas discovery and the US Bureau of Mines built a plant on his property. Bush’s brother James A. Bush manages properties in New York. He died from influenza complications in Chicago.
Longworth, speaker of the U.S. House, died at 9:49 AM in Aiken after a pneumonia illness. Physicians cited his prior vitality as keeping him alive through the night. His wife, Alice Roosevelt, former first daughter, was at his bedside.
Sergt. Edgar R. Steele arrived in Amarillo from Oklahoma City to reenlist for another three years, ending a brief absence. Eight men entered his Federal Building office seeking to join, with exams routing to Oklahoma City before final enlistment in Uncle Sam's service.
In Austin on April 9, Rep. R. M. Hubbard of New Boston said the Texas House will not take up the state road bond proposal passed by the Senate before next week. Opponents predict a House vote against the plan, arguing the separate county refund and road-building bond votes could alter support. The Senate bill ties bond approval to border-to-border highways then county connections and local roads, with a two-mile spur concept to link communities.
The Federal Oil Conservation Board approved the plan for adjusting domestic oil production presented by the Oil States Advisory Committee. Secretary Wilbur urged cooperation and minimal political delay as the industry faces the oil depression and broader effects on other sectors.
More than 125 prize winners from the fourth annual Texas Panhandle Plains Dairy Show paraded through Plainview as award ribbons were handed out after judging. Today sale of two dozen registered Jerseys six bulls and eighteen females was to conclude the event amid muddy roads and forecast rain. Bennett named head of the Dairy Show Association with P C Bennett of Amarillo as president succeeding Sid J Payne. New directors include W C Hale Dimmitt George W Briggs Pampa B Sherrod Lubbock W B Lees Spur and Henry Ansley Amarillo. Association expands territory to include eastern New Mexico counties east of the Rocky Mountains.
Boston engineers announce a neon tube of two inch square plate that reproduces TV pictures eight by ten inches, enlarged via a viewing lens. The development is presented preliminary to forthcoming radio trade shows.
Mrs. M F Hill aged 83 widow of George Hill and sister of W H Fuqua died at home of her daughter in Dallas after her Cameron Lumber Company husband. Mrs. Fuqua aged 71 widow of A 5 Fuqua founder of Quanah quarry died at her son Euclid's home in Dallas area with brief services planned in Griggs Chapel. The two pioneer families of Quanah are noted residents.
At 8:30 tonight three one-act plays will be staged by the Black Mask Players in the Amarillo College auditorium. Sponsored by the Patrons Club, the works include The Fatal Necklace The Memento and One Must Hat. Dr R P Parcells directs. tickets cost 50 cents for adults and 25 cents for students at the door.
The forecast calls for fair and slightly colder conditions tonight with Friday fair. West Texas expects frost in the north and west portions tonight, then fair Friday. New Mexico should see fair weather tonight and Friday, cooler in the east and central areas with frost. Temperatures today at 1 pm ranged from 40 to 42 degrees.
Tickets for The First Year are on sale at City Drug Store No. 1 for a Friday night performance at the Municipal Auditorium. The Little Theater production is under Tri- State Fair Association auspices and will be the season finale. Parquet 50 cents balcony 35 cents. Little Theater members may present cards to obtain tickets.
The city plans to purchase nearly 25 000 feet of pipe and 40 000 feet of sewer tile next Tuesday night to extend water mains, a sewer, and the fire alarm system. Valves and other equipment are listed for bids. Extensions reach Tri State Fair grounds and Eable addition where residents plan a beautification project of over 600 trees. The commission also authorized bidding to furnish gas line pipe from the city gate to near Jefferson Street and Second Avenue.
Bail bond for Bill Pryor of Amarillo faces three forgery charges at Vega after arrest with W N Hiett for cashing a 500 cashier’s check at First State Bank. Hiett’s bonds total 7000 on the three counts. He remains jailed. a third man was later released. Sheriff Halliburton and Amarillo officers made the arrests. See FORGERY Page 2.
President Hoover expressed deep sorrow over the death of Nicholas Longworth saying he served his fellow citizens for over 33 years near the whole of his adult life. He praised Longworth’s happy character sterling honesty and courage in public questions.
Mrs. James F. Curtis was with him as his health declined from pneumonia. His daughter Paulina stayed by his side while doctors fought to ease his symptoms. Mrs. Longworth arrived in Aiken to lend support as the surgeon noted her fortitude.
A cold front hit the Panhandle last night bringing general rain across the Plains. Amarillo reported one fifth of an inch while McLean measured about one inch. South through Lubbock to Shamrock saw up to an inch, with highways slippery but passable and early delays for inbound buses to Amarillo. See RAINS Page 2.
More than 600 will be awarded in the annual Yard and Garden test this summer. The executive committee fixed prizes with first at 7.50, second 5, and third in each of 14 districts, plus 7.50, 5, and 2.50 for the second class. Sweepstakes prize to be announced later. Nine divisional contests offer 10 and 5 for first and second. Entries close April 15. The Globe and The New Homeowners carry entry blanks. Two divisions based on frontage, 60 feet or less and over 60 feet. Mrs. C R Garner is director general and chairman of the contest.
New York police charged Harry Stein a 32 year old Broadway racketeer dope peddler and petty thief with the murder of Vivian Gordon. Stein and three others were arrested after a lengthy questioning and identified as material witnesses. Police said robbery was the motive though Vivian had offered as a witness in the Appellate Court inquiry into vice conditions.
In Washington a mourning nation grieves for Nick Longworth known as a natural human being. Representative McDuffie of Alabama praised him as a genial force in Congress as the capital hopes for a quick recovery from pneumonia. Longworth’s death prompts tributes across the House and a resolution urging him to address Alabama’s legislature.
