A jumble of early 20th century clippings reports two disparate items. In Charlottesville a judge sentenced Dr Richard G Miller to eleven years in prison for second degree murder in the death of Cleon Sprouse 18 year old high school student. In Los Angeles Freeman Bernstein a non Aryan junk dealer claimed Adolf Hitler hired him to obtain nickel but was freed after New York extradition was denied. Bernstein says Hitler begged him to secure nickel and he delivered tin cans instead.
A cold weather traveler left his car on a Dillon street overnight. When the engine would not turn over due to freezing oil, he lit a kindling fire under the engine. Pedestrians diverted, but within 15 minutes the motor thawed and the tourist drove off.
Infant son of Mr and Mrs Harvey Hughes at 200 Maryland Street dies at 6 40 am in a local hospital. Harvey Hughes an engineer for Consumers Ice Company. Funeral services held at Griggs Funeral Chapel at 4 pm with Rev F A Foster of St Andrew's Episcopal Church officiating. Burial in Liano Cemetery.
The House kept alive a bill creating a school land leasing board and changing vacancy laws by voting 7 to 0 to print it on minority report. The public lands committee had given it a 14 to 0 unfavorable report.
Frank Dunn secretary of the Daniel Boone Bicentennial commission says he has the assurance of Senator Alben Barkley that he will urge the post office department to issue a postage stamp honoring the famed trail blazer in Lexington.
More than 50 scarlet fever cases have been reported in Amarillo since January. Fifteen homes in the city and county are under quarantine per health unit director Dr. B. M. Primer. Three diphtheria cases were also reported.
London’s oldest sword polisher James William Robins, 82, says business is booming with coronation orders. He notes his workshop has made swords for three kings and for all parts of the empire as demand rises for a wide range of blades during the coronation season.
Grover Hughes, 53, jailed in Jalil on narcotic charges, used his wooden leg as a noose and hanged himself yesterday.
The Rochester Museum of Arts and Sciences has acquired a 17th century Samurai armor suit once worn by the emperor of Japan's guard. The armor was previously owned by Dr. James H. Pett ee, a missionary to Japan.
A dust storm that swept into Texas on Wednesday moved toward the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday. Port Arthur reported dense dust, while Houston and Galveston noted visibility at about two miles. Winds reached 42 mph in Dallas, with a gust of 70 mph in Amarillo, and Port Arthur logged a 22 mile wind.
Two trade junkets are planned for Amarillo this month. A Colorado Springs special will arrive early on the night of April 18, with Seeley K. Tompkins of the Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce notifying the Amarillo Chamber. The group will stay overnight, depart, and return April 25 for another overnight stop. A Wichita Kansas train arrives April 28 for a 40 minute stay.
The Senate Judiciary Committee postponed until next week a decision on when to conclude its hearings on the Roosevelt court bill. The showdown scheduled for today was put off when Senator Hughes of Delaware agreed to withhold his motion to end the hearings until an executive session next week.
A tornado struck Brundige Alabama seventeen miles southwest of Troy killing four people and injuring at least twenty. The storm flattened more than twenty homes in the residential district. The tragedy occurred today as residents began to assess the damage and count the losses.
Clyde Beatty, famed animal stunt trainer, faced a West Side court on a cruelty charge for abusing lions and tigers. Circus manager E. H. Partello said Beatty would plead guilty and pay the fine. Humane Society inspector Jacob Jacobs, who arrested him, cited prior warnings.
In Austin on April 8, the Roosevelt Court Plan dominates the Tenth District campaign as voters near the close. Brenham awaits a successor to the late Congressman James P. Buchanan, to be named Saturday. Four of eight candidates back the Plan, two oppose it, one supporter in the Town Send Plan group, and a war veteran pledges antiwar efforts.
In Huntsville on April 21, Derrick, a 71-year-old newsstand owner, remained in the hospital yet preserved his 10-year perfect Rotary Club meeting attendance. The club adjourned from its regular venue to the hospital where Derrick was present and led the closing remarks.
Representative Maury Maverick a Democrat from Texas today launched the second House filibuster in as many days to block action on the Dickstein inquiry into Nazi and Communist propaganda in the United States.
Lindberghs plane refueled and inspected at Munich airport as Col and Mrs Charles A Lindbergh prepare to fly from India to England. They landed Tuesday night and remained at their hotel this morning amid cloudy weather with no departure time announced.

Oscar M. Powell of the federal social security board announced a grant of 846 602 48 to match state funds for old age assistance in April. The board approved 2 539 807 73 for Texas for the quarter ending June 30, but only enough to match state funds is available immediately. Texas has been allotted 8 027 552 in federal funds for old age assistance since the program began in April 1938.
