A massive blast at the Producers and Refiner Oil refining plant in Parco Wyoming killed fourteen men and left two missing. By noon the death toll rose to seventeen with Calvin Smith dying in Rawlins hospital. Several identified victims are listed with ages. fourteen bodies recovered, fire caused $500,000 in damages, and two workers were severely burned.
A historic note recalls April 6 for the U S entry into World War I. The House passed the war resolution 373 to 60 after Senate approval, Janet Rankin voting against war. President Wilson signed the resolution and mobilization orders followed, including seizing German ships such as the Waterland La Leviathan transport.
An attempted dynamite attack on locks and dam heat at a town in Arkansas was discovered by national guardsmen. A pitched battle ensued leaving three wounded including guardsmen T. A. Grider and Henry Harrison and farmer Will Wilson who, with a companion, was said to have been surprised during the dynamiting attempt.
Frank M. Sterrett, inspector for the veterans' bureau in Oklahoma City, arrived in Amarillo last night to assist disabled veterans and will stay several days.
The forecast calls for tonight and Thursday to be partly cloudy with mild temperatures. Hourly readings show 7 a.m. at 56, 9 a.m. 57, 10 a.m. 60, 11 a.m. 60, noon 60, and 1 p.m. 63 degrees with a prior note comparing to 74 degrees a year ago.
Governor Moody sent a veto to the secretary of state blocking a $30,000 emergency appropriation for Borger overflow enrollment. The attorney general's department ruled the bill unconstitutional as it based funding on enrollment increases not tied to the regular census.
The Standard House Corporation plans a large Amarillo factory at Second and Washington on a 280 by 600 foot site financed by Amarillo and Chicago investors with $100,000 capital. Initial daily output will be 18 standard 14 by 24 foot houses, employing 50 workers, rising as demand grows. Key figures include Jarett as president and Theo Ahlborn as chief engineer with Daniel Loeb and M. L. Swarzberger in executive roles. Houses are portable and can be erected by two men in six hours.
Ted Walker of Colorado Springs and Tom Stromis of Raton New Mexico were hurt when a scaffold collapsed sending them sixteen feet to the ground at the city's reservoir under construction in the west part of town. They were taken to St Anthony's sanitarium by ambulance and officials say injuries are not serious.
Commander Francesco de Pinedo and crew escaped uninjured after the Santa Maria caught fire during preflight at Roosevelt Dam Arizona. The Italian aviator had refueled at Elephant Butte Dam New Mexico and planned to reach San Diego by late afternoon. The aircraft sank to about sixty feet, engine failure blamed for the blaze. Thousands of spectators, including many Italians, watched the disaster unfold.
The body of Lee Harris, 18, drowned in the Trinity river near Dallas was recovered by a large seine on Wednesday. Harris and Clifford Stockton, 17, were drowned while fishing near Record Crossing dam and Stockton's body search continued.
The Ford Motor Company of Detroit filed its annual financial report with the state commissioner of corporations and taxation in Boston. It shows a surplus of 607,657,784 on a balance sheet of 744,200,20 and capital stock of 17,264,500.
Borger reports say an underworld merger involving two Oklahoma gangs could aid Ray Terrell and Matthew Kimes in escaping. The Jarrett brothers and Inman allegedly joined Terrell and Kimes as lawmen chase the pair for a Pampa bank holdup and deputy sheriffs’ killings.
Amarillo based cattle loan firm with 200000 paid in capital seeks charter and plans to lend up to 2000000 to Panhandle cattlemen. Tom Coble presides. O F Jones vice president. Pat Landergin and others as stockholders. Local unit to work through Intermediate Credit Bank of Houston for rediscounting and longer loan maturities.
The White Deer Oil company reports a new well flowing over sixty barrels daily with increasing output. Tankage is being erected and president Jim Whittington plans further drilling within days. The discovery proves at least 160 acres and extends the Roxana pool two miles west, with another 160 acres offsetting the Bain well northeast of Roxana producing 500 barrels daily after a shot.
A Buick sedan was stolen from the locked garage of T. H. Rowan in Amarillo. The car had only a few hundred miles and bears license 750-606 with seat 683-054 and engine 1,629,417. Rowan offers a $50 reward for recovery.
State Adjutant General R L Robertson and Gov Dan Moody's private secretary W B Gatewood traveled to Borger to conduct investigations. It is unclear if the mission involves calling martial law after citizens had requested such action earlier. Moody had previously declined martial law and sent ten Texas rangers to stay until order is restored.
Ten men were arrested in Borger in an election fraud probe and released on bond to appear before the grand jury in Stinnett. Officials and Texas Rangers joined in the arrests as ballots and poll tax receipts surfaced. Incumbent John B. Miller was re-elected mayor 247 to 122 amid contested results in several races including commissioners and city judge.
