A driverless car plowed into a crowd in downtown Pittsburgh injuring ten people, two critically. The vehicle smashed the Sun Drug Company storefront on Diamond Street near Smithfield Street, then rolled half a block further with a passerby and an elderly woman passenger among those hurt.
The Senate foreign relations subcommittee weighing McCarthy charges against the State Department delays contempt actions to force access to secret loyalty files. Senator Connally doubts any citation will be voted, while McCarthy's Lattimore documents and Jessup donation questions await formal replies.
Washington April 4 The Defense Department orders new studies of its 13.911 billion budget to see if more funds are needed for modernized aircraft. Secretary Johnson will ask the joint chiefs to recheck, and if they urge more money he will request Truman and the Budget Bureau. Eisenhower urged strengthening Alaska and more planes. Congress push grows for higher military spending as Vinson urges 583.3 million more for war planes to meet atomic-era threats.
In Oklahoma, a nervous young gunman held up the First State Bank of Okarche, escaping with about $4,000 in currency in a stolen Oldsmobile. Patrols set 12 roadblocks as investigators pursue the alleged beginner in the stickup, while bank officials note a brief loan interview precede the robbery.
New York April 4. An AFL Bartenders Union pickets an Eighth Avenue bar accusing it of hiring women as bartenders. The barmaids display a sign saying women cannot join the union. A union spokesman says the union does not discriminate but believes it unhealthy for a woman to work behind the bar.
Amarillo recorded a 60 degree temperature spread from 86 to 26 as the 24 hour period ended at 6 30 this morning. Wichita Falls topped Texas with 99 degrees, then fell to 39. Dalhart and Clarendon saw 29 and 30 lows. Windy, cold today then warmer by Wednesday.
Henry 26 died in a taxicab shot in the chest near the Childress home 404-B North Madison as the six Negro killings this year alarmed officials. A woman charged with murder with malice denied bail. District Attorney King urged heavier penalties, arguing juries favor harsher sentences in white-on-white slayings and noting readiness to try all cases. He cited a crowded file of Negro killings since Jan 1 and contrasted with police estimates for 1949.
Iowa City April 4 The murder trial of University of Iowa psychology student Robert Bednasek was sent to a jury. Judge James F P Gaffney instructed verdicts and penalties with the option of life term or death if guilty of first degree murder. The state had sought the death penalty in closing. Bednasek contends Margaret Gee Gee Jackson died from a fall against a chair during a forbidden rendezvous at a men’s rooming house on December 11.
Shreveport Louisiana police said they may press cruelty charges against Mrs Frances Landers after she fell asleep smoking in bed, burning her 10 month old son.

The Navy says foreign submarines very probably operate off the California coast after a four day search yielded no confirmed sightings. Capt. Holbrook reported radar and sonar contacts but no visual sub sightings. Reports extend to Yaquina, Oregon, where civilians saw a near shore object amid ongoing investigations.
A severe sand storm in Cairo and the Suez Canal area blocked more than 20 ships from entering the canal and damaged windows while causing at least one vessel to run aground. The storm eased by morning.
Tokyo April 4. The Japanese Communist Party newspaper Akawata issued a new propaganda line asserting Japan is becoming an arms factory. General MacArthur's headquarters has denied that war materials are being produced in Japan.
The Los Angeles sheriff listed the puzzling disappearance of Theodore Donay a 51 year old Detroit importer and convicted traitor as a possible suicide. He vanished Saturday from Catalina Island and a mysterious submarine sighting was reported nearby though no link was proven. The 18 foot motorboat rented by Donay was found at sea with a suitcase of clothes aboard a note in his hotel room suggesting death by his own action.
Local business Gunn Bros Thrift expands into the Poe district with a new outlet at 1200 West 6th, tied to Oliver é Wiggins Lumber Co. as the parent or partner entity. The move signals a broader retail footprint in the area.
African Safari directed by Bill Lin begins a two day run at the Esquire Theater with matinees at 4 and evening shows at 7 30 today and tomorrow. Huntsville awaits two condemned men James Willis Blackmon and William Smith Jr as they are scheduled for execution in the electric chair for the 1948 killing of Houston bus driver Leslie Gibbs. Blackmon’s sentence was moved to align with Smith’s after stays and appeals.
In Nassau County Mrs Marian Attfield the first census taker to finish her rounds reported a grave scene at her area. She found only a cemetery and an abandoned house with no residents to interview.
