Amarillo’s birth rate outpaces deaths by nearly three to one with births averaging over daily. City health unit at the city hall notes rising importance of birth and death records for social security, citizenship, and government benefits, led by deputy registrar Mrs. George Ferlet.
Mayor Ross Rogers announced a contract to clean five wells at the McDonald water site to boost output by about two to two and a half million gallons daily. He warned Amarillo faces a possible dry lake within 60 to 90 days without adequate rainfall and stressed need for new water sources within two years.
Wisconsin voters overwhelmingly backed a third term for President Roosevelt by about 3 to 1 in the Democratic primary advisory vote. Roosevelt led Garner in the state tally, while Dewey delegates surged ahead of Vandenberg. New York and Missouri results also featured party shifts and local changes.
Arthur L. Carnahan of Austin, a former resident visiting Amarillo, says publicity photos for Virginia City place Amarillo on the map about 30 years before the town was founded. He notes the still shows a map background with the Dakotas and Amarillo in large letters, contradicting the 1887 founding date.

New Amarillo building activity keeps a ten thousand dollar daily average with three permits dated this week. C. L. Copeland receives a $4,500 five room brick house at 1905 Monroe Street, E. L. Hill a $3,400 five room frame house at 4215 West Ninth Avenue, and H. A. Burton a $3,750 six room frame house at 3419 West Tenth Avenue. Year to date construction costs reach $562,961.
Paris reports a French military tribunal sentenced 36 Communist former deputies to five years in prison and loss of civil rights for carrying out orders of the Communist International.
Helsinki on April 3 reports Education Minister Antti Kukkonen stating Finland cannot organize the Olympic games this year due to the abnormal situation prevailing among the great powers.
An Amarillo census enumerator describes his first day in a crowded district. He notes the challenges of supplemental questions and that many people cannot recall details from April 1 1935. A curious woman even invited him in for coffee.
Early today Amarillo sections were shaken by an explosion that caused no damage or injuries. Santa Fe foreman J. H. McCabe was steaming an empty gasoline tank car when a hose end whipped by steam struck sparks against the tank. The resulting flash ignited fumes and hurled the dome cap about 40 feet.
Captain Jim Line of the Texas Highway Patrol announced all district patrolmen finished the American Red Cross prescribed first aid course. Nine patrol cars are equipped as emergency units, providing about 60 000 hours of service and traveling over 600 000 miles this year.
E R Lewis proposes a $7500 cash settlement for the Sixth Avenue and Georgia Street triangular island, excluding personal property. The offer includes Lewis receiving all salvage materials and requires the city to fill the hole, clean the lot, and act within 48 hours. Mayor Ross Rogers says a response will be given before the deadline.

Amarillo Safety Council urges the city to hire at least seven more traffic officers and implement traffic control upgrades. Proposals include red light right turns, signal modernization on Polk Street, redesigned bus zones, West Sixth Avenue through street status, and new accident reporting procedures. A petition for more police on East Tenth Avenue and a call to purchase extra traffic signals also appear for consideration.

The Amarillo Veterans' Administration facility will open April 8 after a delayed equipment shipment. Dr. O E Herndon says admissions will start with emergency cases and distant patients, with full occupancy soon. Open house is set for tomorrow and Friday from 2 30 to 4 p m.
Casing has been run 4,300 feet in the Old Tack No 1 and the Thompson Park wildcat is being cleaned out for further drilling. With the salt water cased off, drilling today is expected to proceed faster. Depth will be gained by under-roaming. even without pay, the wildcat may still yield commercial quantities if oil shows at 3,797 feet.
Jose Gonzales pleaded guilty to federal charges of forging and tendering a United States Treasury check. He was arraigned before a United States commissioner, bond set at 250 dollars, and released after posting. Federal officers with Amarillo police and Gray County sheriff’s department arrested him yesterday in Pampa.
Potter County Agricultural Agent Frank Stubbs said the high winds yesterday caused less wheat damage than expected. Much of the blowing occurred where no wheat had sprouted and even where soil exposed wheat remained upright.
