Douglas Georgia April 3 investigation into enforced party donations follows ex postmaster L S Peterson killing Elton Kirkland and then taking his own life. Notes accuse the Republican party of extracting 2000 dollars over five years driving him into debt. Peterson suggests Kirkland conspired against him. Congressman Lankford plans a full inquiry. An unsigned letter in Petersons pocket claims funds to relay to Ben J Davis Georgia Republican committeeman. Davis denies any demand.
New York April 8 The Atchison Topeka Santa Fe railroad places common stock on a ten dollar annual basis as directors declare a quarterly dividend of 2.50. Previously five dollars per quarter plus an extra three dollars annually. Payment due June 1 for records as of May 4. Blackburn ambulance. Phone 5211.
The death of Lula Miller, a 60 year old pioneer farmer, was found in the loft of the Miller barn with a head wound and a rope loose around her neck. A coroner's jury planned to report at 2 p.m. and investigators suspect possible murder.
Santa Barbara April 3 Colonel Charles A Lindbergh guarded his plans for secrecy as he prepared to hold meetings with Harry F Guggenheim president of the Guggenheim foundation. The talks were understood to cover a potential future role in the foundation movement to promote commercial aviation.
Washington April 3 The House tax reduction of 280 million dollars should be pared to about 201 million and perhaps 12 million, Secretary Mellon told the Senate Finance Committee. He outlined a program including restoring the 5 percent auto tax and trimming the 14.5 percent corporate levy, with further surtax and estate tax changes. The plan, plus House provisions, aims at a net 201.1 million dollar cut, though a gloomier treasury outlook followed.
The only licensed portable broadcasting station in the country owned by C. C. Pyle is in Amarillo with a yellow car bearing KGGM and Pyle’s name. The vehicle signals the foot race near arrival, with runners expected in Amarillo Thursday as an advance agent.
Additional workers this morning took the field in the solicitation of funds for Amarillo College and Dr. R. E. L. Morgan reported satisfactory progress in the signing of subscriptions. The College fund of $200,000 is expected to be completed within the next week or ten days. The committees have been courteously received and donations have been very liberal.
Commander H. M. Daniel was found guilty by a court martial in Gibraltar on all charges tied to the Royal Oak affair at Malta. The ruling includes publicly reading remarks subversive of naval discipline and criticizing the conduct and orders of Rear Admiral Bernard St. G. Collard. Captain Kenneth G. B. Dewar is slated to face similar charges.
Keystone, W V April 3 Eight bodies were recovered from the number 2 mine of the Keystone Coal and Coke company after an explosion yesterday. West Virginia mining chief R M Lambie said all 275 employees in the mine are accounted for. The mine, bought recently by Koppers Co of Pittsburgh from Col T E Houston of Cincinnati, was the new owners first day in charge.
Officials of Khiva Shrine Temple led by Potentate J M Read of Memphis meet today to set the spring ceremonial date. Preparations are described as among the greatest, with plans for new features and extensive involvement from patrol and initiatory bodies. Indications point to wide Shrine attendance, possibly including Imperial Potentate, with a strong band and drum corps, and a projected class of 125 initiates drawing about 2,000 Shriners from the Panhandle Plains and North America.
Foresters in Little Rock on April 3 prayed for rain as the only hope to extinguish forest fires burning since Sunday in Newton County and the Ouachita National Forest reserve. Griggs ambulance is listed with a local phone number.
Birch Helms testified before the oil committee that his New York firm sought President Harding and cabinet intervention in the Teapot Dome lease. He said telegrams in 1922 claimed cabinet approval for development plans and a May 1 1922 Hoover aide letter said Hoover had no knowledge of pending arrangements. Healso noted prior talks with Edwin Denby and Interior officials before the Sinclair lease was announced.
Seventy five dairy men entered 247 Jerseys Holsteins and Guernseys at the first annual Texas Panhandle Plains Dairy show opened in Plainview. Jersey entries led with 184 head as stalls overflow the 140 by 140 foot Overall Barn. The Mistletoe Creamery Co offers a silver loving cup to the judging team scoring the highest points among the three breeds, to be awarded annually.
Washington April 3 The post office department announced the inauguration on May 1 of air mail service from New York to New Orleans.
Mrs. Robert A. McMeans of Amarillo died when the car she rode in overturned near Dumas about 1 am. Her husband Mr. McMeans, a Santa Fe purchasing official, was not seriously hurt. They were returning from Pratt Kansas after visiting relatives. The body was moved to Du mans for return to Amarillo.
Four young men who died riding in a box car on the Denver road near Tascosa when railroad tiles shifted may be buried without identification. Their bodies have rested at N. J. Grigge and Sons in Amarillo for about a week as thousands viewed them and hundreds of telegrams arrived from across the country. If unrecognized soon, burial will take place in Liano cemetery.
Defense attorneys for oilman Harry F. Sinclair sought a five day postponement of his trial on a conspiracy to defraud the government charge. They awaited a deposition from former Interior Secretary Fall who is reported to have said political figures advised him to explain the source of a $100,000 loan from FE. Doheny and Fall’s testimony could influence the case.
J L Nunn of Amarillo and D M Warren of Panhandle announce merger of Childress Daily Index and Childress Post. Fred A Story remains manager and part owner as the Post becomes a weekly publication.
Northampton Mass April 3 Mrs Lemira Goodhue mother of Mrs Calvin Coolidge passed another comfortable night at Dickinson hospital and this morning was reported considerably brighter.
