Thunderstorms and swollen streams claim six lives across Central Missouri Northern Oklahoma and southeastern Kansas as heavy rain spurs new flood fears. Drownings include Ray Bunch 22 Fairfax Okla Lee Russell 7 Mountain View and Ivan Fry Baxter Kan along with three lightning deaths Elvis Trusty 17 Muskogee Okla Leslie Jones 17 Springfield Mo. Local damage reported to property and farms as rivers rise and roads flood.
Tonight fair and slightly cooler with probable light frost. Saturday outlook is fair. Today’s temperature range compared with last year shows extremes of 64 and 28 degrees. Hourly readings begin at 41 at 7 a.m. rising to 68 by 1 p.m.
Ranger Jim McCoy told the state board that unofficial information from Gainesville reform school inmates claimed excessive whipping. Dr. Harrington said the board has not acted on the ranger's report as investigations continue following complaints about severity.
Joe Bill Inman, a Dalhart high school youth, is sentenced to ten years in the penitentiary for the March 6 killing of Billy Patterson. The Dalham county jury deliberated 23 hours in the case tried on a murder charge with Inman claiming self defense after Patterson allegedly threatened to kill him. The trial drew a crowded courtroom as witnesses testified to ongoing enmity and threats between the two men.
In Martinez California on April 1 the airdale dog Rags pulled two year old Stephen Lotz from the San Joaquin river and barked for help. Rescuers arrived after the child slipped from a levee into the stream and despite Rags effort the boy died shortly after parents reached the scene.
Florinto Canales aged 30 was shot and killed by Hidalgo county officers after resisting arrest on a wife murder charge in Weslaco. His wife, about 27, was found at home with her throat slashed. Canales had repeatedly escaped from jail and returned to attack her, leading to deadly confrontations with pursuing officers.
Reports from Bucharest and Balkan points indicate King Ferdinand of Romania is near death. Dispatches circulated by the Associated Press note the health crisis as authorities monitor the situation closely.
The Pittsburgh Terminal Coal company announced in Pittsburgh on April 1 that its fines in the district will be operated on a non-union basis moving forward.
Panhandle grocer M. R. Harris of Harris Grocery, found dead at home with a bullet wound and pistol nearby, the coroner's jury ruling death by own action. Harris, in poor health, had moved from Stratford, Texas a year earlier and leaves a widow and five children. Remains were sent to Stratford for burial.
209 Marines of the Sixth Regiment arrived in Amarillo at 2 PM to greet them with cheers led by Hanson Post American Legion. The troops toured the city before boarding for a San Diego departure on April 4 or 5, with gifts of fruit and cigars from local supporters. The Handerson is ready to receive the battalion.
A Telegraph dispatch from Tokyo reports a heavy earthquake early this morning across western Japan. Early disaster districts show pain and damage but, as yet, no casualties. Watch repairing, diamonds remounted, from the Diamond Shop at 11 Polk Street.
Panhandle oil jumps to 2.50 a barrel as Moore county reports a 6000 acre Kilgore gusher and Amarillo starts its water plant. City cuts taxes by half, demands removing parking limits, and eases traffic rules while schools declare a week off. Several regional bets on road bonds and financing spark further chatter.
Whitey Walker was arrested in Borger after officers Kenyon and Terry were killed during a bank robbery spree tied to Ray Terrell and Matthew Kimes. Police credited the bandits with a calculated ambush near Pampa and identified the trio with bank-robbery evidence and recovered pistols.
