Beverly Hills correspondent recounts Frank Hawkes arriving from Buenos Aires in 48 flying hours. Notes airlines at Los Angeles handle 243 million miles and 1.9 million passengers with passenger accident rate under one in 25 000. Mentions fog disrupting travel but predicts planes will overcome it.
Texas lawmakers approved a plan to merge the highway patrol and the Texas Rangers under a single director with a central criminal identification bureau and new divisions. The governor would appoint 300 special Rangers and can call on peace officers in emergencies, with the House voting on related constitutional amendments and salaries for county commissioners.
A $50 reward, $25 per dog, offered for the return of two missing pointer dogs lost Monday morning southwest of Amarillo near Wolflin golf club. One is a 9-year-old stocky almost white dog with a liver patch and a sore look under the eye. the other is a 1-year-old larger pointer, also almost white with a liver patch. Governor Allred signed a bill granting $3,000,000 for the Texas Centennial and urged the legislature to stay in session beyond May 11 to secure needed revenue and finish unfinished business. He argued the referendum mandate requires a real observance and Dallas bonds have been voted.
LeRoy Moyers eight-year-old son of Mr and Mrs G D Moyers died from burns suffered when he fell into a tub of hot water in the backyard. He was walking on stilts as his mother prepared the wash tub. The death occurred in Childress on May 7.
Fair and cooler conditions for Amarillo and vicinity on Wednesday with partly cloudy to unsettled skies in the west portion of the region. North New Mexico sees unsettled, cooler weather, while the south remains fair. Hourly readings from yesterday show a high near 80 and a low around 52 with some misread annotations.
Amarillo officials plan participation in the West Texas Chamber of Commerce Convention at Plainview. A noon Capitol Hotel meeting of the Amarillo convention committee will finalize Amarillo's role for the three day event. Ed Mayer hosts a complimentary luncheon as a preliminary luncheon. A special train to Plainview may be arranged to boost Amarillo’s delegation.
Sheriff W F Cato of Garza County along with attorney N C Outlaw and E R Braddock were acquitted of conspiring to obstruct justice in an instructed verdict after the government failed to prove its case. The matter stems from the February 7 shooting of federal agent Spencer Stafford in Post and Braddock’s grand jury testimony.
Oklahoma's Congressman Percy L. Gassaway arrived in New York with sharp words for Huey Long and Father Charles E. Coughlin calling Long a political tom-tit and Coughlin a crackpot preacher who mixes politics and religion. He also questioned their money knowledge in strong terms.
In San Antonio on May 7 conflicting business interests sparked a gunfire incident at the Mc Manus Crum Motor Company. J B Crum 43 died en route to a hospital and Ray Shelton 31 was critically wounded. others escaped with minor injuries. J J Rheiner office manager was hit in the left sleeve while N J Campbell sales manager and M Leopold salesman were uninjured. Edwin Uecker district attorney investigator was briefed on the event.
In Owen Sound Ontario on May 7 a five year old girl Audrey Brown underwent double mastoid surgery by Dr A Flaird. After the operation she was declared dead but a nurse alerted the doctor and he injected nine drops of adrenalin into the heart. Audrey gasped and began to breathe showing signs of recovery.
A coroner's jury heard that a crippled radio set, fog and dwindling gasoline contributed to the Sky Chief crash. The inquest viewed five bodies including United States Senator Bronson Cutting and pilot Har vey Bolton as wreckage lay on a northeastern Missouri farm. The log cited a failing transmitter and weak two way receiver as officials traced the emergency landing attempt near Kirksville.
The body of Billy M Thompson 24 of Amarillo was brought home after a fatal car crash near Midland early yesterday. His wife Christine Dyche is hospitalized with serious injuries. Margaret Mann 18 daughter of Rev W R Mann Midland is killed. W D Ruffin Abilene lightly hurt. Thompson formerly worked at Amarillo hotels and joined Halliburton Oil Well Cementing Company two years ago.
Berlin May 7 1915 a U-boat officer Karl Scherb defended the sinking of the British liner Lusitania as self defense in a hunger blockade. He said orders aimed at disturbing British routes justified the torpedo strike and cited the vessel carried ammunition for a large explosion. 1198 lives were lost including 124 Americans off the Irish coast.
Six coal miners were killed when a shaft at the South Wilkes-Barre colliery of Glen Alden Coal Company collapsed. The mine is among those involved in the United Anthracite Miners of Pennsylvania strike that began in February.
Billy M. Thompson aged 24 dies in a Midland area automobile collision. His widow Christine Dyche is injured. Also killed is Margaret Mann, 18, of Midland. Driver W D Ruffin of Abilene sustains minor injuries in the same incident. Thompson family includes Col. Ernest O. Thompson, Texas Railroad Commission chairman.
President Roosevelt's works allotment board separated two billion dollars from the four billion relief fund for eight general project types. The board issued a broad plan but did not authorize actual spending and withheld half the fund from earmarking for an unspecified period.
Allegheny County jail in Pittsburgh saved money by receiving two discontinued coffee urns from the Pacific Coast after the manufacturer offered them at a price low enough to cover transport through the Panama Canal, making them cheaper than new models sold locally.
One hundred Amarillo youths will be taken into the Civilians Conservation Corps on or before June 15. W. A. Crawford, representative of the Department of Labor, announced yesterday. A total of approximately 500 boys are expected.
Senate supporters pass the Patman measure to pay the World War II bonus with 2.2 billion in new currency. The final 55 to 33 vote defies White House objections and ends a colorful day of balloting with swift congressional action.
The Senate passed the Patman bonus bill authorizing payment of the full face value of adjusted service certificates minus loans and interest. About 1,000 on average for 15 percent who borrowed and 497 for 85 percent who did not. The treasury would issue non interest bearing notes to pay certificates, with 2.2019 billion dollar total and possible currency contraction if price levels rise. Eligible veterans without certificates have until January 2, 1940 to apply. About 3.5 million veterans hold certificates.
The Senate rejected the Harrison compromise bonus plan 54 to 30 and the Vinson proposal 52 to 35, preventing an override of the Presidential veto on the House approved bill. Observers cited a flood of telegrams supporting the Patman bill as a factor in Senate actions.
A postal department notice notes a dime letter wave causing a major rush at the Amarillo post office. Assistant Postmaster C. M. Tyler cites a 30 percent jump in stamp sales and 30 000 letters passing through the stamp machine in one day, many sent to Denver and other parts of America.
