Washington reports the coal strike ends as John L. Lewis and operators sign a contract. About 372,000 United Mine Workers will return to work with a raise averaging $1.40 per day after four weeks of idleness that strained the national economy.
Senator McCarthy of Wisconsin said he will present information to a Senate subcommittee alleging security risks on State Department payrolls. He claims Communists are or have been employed by the department and will testify as the five man subcommittee led by Senator Tydings opens its probe. McCarthy indicated two investigators have worked on 80 cases, though he did not name individuals.
The agreement ends the nation’s coal strike woes with Lewis’s victory securing basic wage change to 14.75, a 30 cent per ton royalty fund boost, and union shop retention. It runs to July 1, 1952 with wage talks open after April 1 1951 and calls for back payments by March 15.
Washington reports scientists warn epidemic grasshopper infestations may hit at least 14 western states in 1950. The trial of Donald Gene Young 21 of 1720 East Eighth for murder with malice is set this week. He faces charges in the October slaying of Charles Freeman a service station attendant in Amarillo. Dwight Hoskins already convicted and sentenced to 35 years. Young a private in the Army was arrested after reporting to Camp Kilmer New Jersey. Attorney George McCarthy of Amarillo also represents Hoskins. A special venire has been requested and juror count is to be determined.

Roy B. Ezell, 72, Parmer County treasurer for 16 years, died in a Clovis hospital after a yearlong illness. A Farwell and Parmer County resident for 33 years, he is survived by a widow Della, two daughters L D Parke Amarillo and L E Parke Roswell, three sons R B Ezell Roswell Glen M Ezell Portales Melvin E Ezell Bovina, a brother Will F Ezell Crosbyton, a sister Ruby Fowler Chapel Hill Tenn., 14 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Funeral plans are set by Steed Funeral Home of Clovis.
A body believed to be one of six airmen from a twin engine Beechcraft forced down in Lake Michigan was recovered by the Coast Guard Sundew near North Point Light. The search continued as a parachute was spotted while conditions hampered efforts. The crew included Maj John D Schindler Jr of Milwaukee and Lieut Col Charles Meyers, with other members from CAP and Ft Bragg. The flight was en route from Bol ling Field to Mitchell Field and last contact was 6 30 Saturday evening.

Buick reported a February sales record with 38 410 units. GM vice president Ivan L. Wiles said February sales were 10 percent above January and Buick’s 1950 deliveries rose to 173 388. The January February gain over 1949 was 25 percent and February 1950 was 36 percent ahead of February 1949.
