O C Moore, a Pampa taxicab driver, said two men robbed him of more than 12 dollars, tied him with rope, and left him seven miles south of the Southern Club after boarding his taxi around 10 10 P M. One man brandished a gun and ordered him to drive on. Moore freed himself and returned to Pampa. his cab was found nearby. The robbers were about 5 7 or 8, one blond and one with black hair.
Globe wireless reports the Sandgate crew of 40 men were rescued far out in the Atlantic by the S S President after the British freighter caught fire. The incident occurred at sea near New York on June 26.
Government revenue is expected to exceed the official 1937 estimates by about 50 million dollars while outlays rise roughly 200 million above predicted figures. The net deficit stands at about 114 million more than Roosevelt’s April revision, with debt nearing 36.3 billion.
Carnegie scientist Dr. Frederick E. Clements says the Great Plains are an unrivaled reservoir of soil fertility and that dust storms and droughts recur in cycles. In an early morning crash four miles south of San Marcos three people died and two were injured. Victims include Robert Richardson, 51, confectionery operator, and his wife 40 who died later in hospital. Del Rio residents Atanacio Sifuentes and Lupe Gonzales were among the injured. Sifuentes was not expected to live. Richardson employees Billy Miller and Charles Ramsel had minor injuries. The Richarsons will be buried in Omaha, Neb.. they leave a 12 year old son.
Washington reports the agriculture department says Argentina will raise wheat acreage for the 1937 38 season due to strong prices. A Buenos Aires dispatch notes 34 794 000 bushels of wheat remained available for export on June 1 as seeding began for the new crop.
West Texas should be partly cloudy Monday and Tuesday with probable local showers in the extreme west. New Mexico shows unsettled Monday with likely showers in the north central and east portions, Tuesday generally fair with little temperature change.
The seven state steel strike moved into a new phase as union leaders warned of action to protect workers at the Weirton plants. Clinton S. Golden notified Weir, citing threats by the so called security league and urging lawful measures as the strike nears its second month.
In the Texas Panhandle, Follett formed from Ivanhoe Oklahoma as Santa Fe Railway officials shaped two nearby towns. Ivanhoe, once a 150 person town with several stores and a school, moved as Follett emerged in fall 1917. The school remained, and the area grew rapidly with many German descent residents.
Heavy showers spread across Hereford Adrian and Plainview wheat belts last night. Thunderstorms from the west brought brief downpours in Hereford for about 15 minutes and 30 minute showers in Plainview where harvest was at its peak. Canyon Claude Amarillo and English Airport areas reported light rain or showers with varying intensity.
Four youths die instantly and two more later from a two-car head on crash seven miles west of Erick on Highway 66. Victims include Opal Hammons 20 and LaVerne Avant 19. Bartlett 20, Harman 24, Herbert Copeland 16 and Lonnie Copeland 16. Names, ages, and funeral plans are listed with details of the wreck and injuries.
Wheat harvest spreads across the southern Plains as crews labor from daylight to dark on a crop described as the biggest since 1926 and the richest since the war. Texas dryland and irrigated yields reach 39 to 60 bushels per acre while Oklahoma expects a twofold rise over last year. Prices stay above 1 dollar a bushel as storage expands and transport strains grow.
