In Houston on June 27 the Democratic National Convention faced a volatile session marked by several fist fights on the floor as police intervened with night sticks. Delegates, angered by questions of religious equality, returned to Sam Houston Hall to hear fiery nominating speeches, heightening the charged atmosphere.
Albany June 27 Governor Alfred E. Smith remained impassive as radio accounts described uproar over religious liberty at the convention. He joined later to hear Washington correspondents discuss the religious note and laughed briefly at a remark about pine boards smelling like a Methodist camp meeting. He returned to state business then planned to listen to the night session.
In a session that began with a parade the Smith forces erupted in enthusiastic uproar as Senator Joseph T. Robinson read a prepared address on Jefferson and religious liberty. The crowd clashed within ten feet of the speaker's stand and elsewhere in the hall during the hearing reflected in constitutional quotes about religious liberty.
Partly cloudy conditions are forecast for Amarillo and vicinity and for West Texas on Thursday. Generally fair in New Mexico with little temperature change. A high pressure trough sits over the Rockies with centers over Utah and New Mexico, showers in the Plains and Mississippi Valley, and seasonal temperatures expected.
Senator Joseph T. Robinson of Arkansas as general chairman urged religious tolerance at the Houston convention. The Smith forces pushed to pull North Carolina into the demonstration, sparking fist fights quelled by police with night sticks. Robinson remains a leading vice presidential possibility.

Bob Emmett of the Fair association says the hill road now supports safe two way traffic due to crowned surfaces and sandy soil. News notes state leaders from several states have joined the list and more additions were made yesterday afternoon.
Five injured as a tornado hit eastern Wichita and western Clay counties. W. N. Coombs, 15, died. others include D. M. Splawn and Mrs Splawn, severely hurt, and Mrs T W Williams and Wilma Chapmond with injuries. Property damage estimated at 750000 with crops and fruit harmed.
Norman Sunday city marshal of Kenedy Texas was arrested and held without bond on murder charges following E B Bowen the former nightwatchman s death on Saturday Bowen was shot three times while sitting in a chair at a Kenedy filling station authorities said Sunday was indicted in connection with the case and remains in custody in Karnes County Texas
At the Democratic platform hearings in Houston the Eighteenth Amendment and Volstead Act provoked two hours of bitter debate. Senator Tydings clashed with Daniels and Glass while Senator Blease separated Tydings from the senator, as Cannon pressed for a law enforcement plank amid tempers flaring and a hammer used in the melee.

One million dollars in 15 year mortgage bonds were sold in Chicago to Lawrence Stern & Company for the 18 story Davidson hotel at Seventh and Tyler streets. The structure will be 140 by 140 feet with 600 rooms and an added 18th floor. Construction aims to finish in eight or nine months backed by Amarillo and Los Angeles financiers and the Baker Hotel Company.
A 5,000 barrel oil well brought in near Brownfield in New Mexico. J E Shelton reported the drillers struck oil and pushed deeper, when at 4 30 yesterday afternoon the well blew out with force, throwing all tools clear. The producer is estimated at 5,000 barrels.
The search for Roald Amundsen and five companions intensified as the Norwegian cruiser Tordenskjold the French auxiliary Quentin Roosevelt and the sealer Heimland set out from Tromsoe for Bear Island and northern waters. Louise Boyd lent the Hobby to the Norwegian venture and donations pour in to fund a broader search.
Washington June 27 Secretary Hoover announces his intention to resign his cabinet post shortly to free himself for the presidential campaign. He expects to hand the resignation to President Coolidge before July 15.
Borger Texas June 27 bond of N F Salamy proprietor Amarillo Wholesale Grocery charged with negligent homicide in death of 14 year old Harold Foltz set at 3500 dollars and the man released pending grand jury action. Witnesses say Salamy's machine skidded into a field after striking the boy.

Democrats filled the Houston auditorium as speakers from six states urged their favorites yet the crowd believed Alfred E. Smith of New York would win once balloting began. Tensions rose after Smith supporters clashed over anti Smith state standards during a triumphal procession. Charles Crisp spoke for Walter F. George, Franklin D. Roosevelt supported Smith, Charles Howell for James A. Reed, Harvey H. Hannah for Cordell Hull, Evans Woollen for Indiana, with brief intro by William H. O'Brien. Three bands entertained before the night session.
Avell Meador, a young insurance agent, was found guilty of forgery by a district court jury and sentenced to two years in state prison. The case involved checks linked to a large insurance policy paid to Mrs. John Shelley after her husband was fatally shot. Meador’s lawyers plan an appeal as prosecutors wrap up the term of court.
